Establish a Student Advisory Council to provide advice and perspectives to the Minister, as part of the development of a broader student engagement framework.

What's New

Over the 2021/22 term, Student Advisory Council members met nine times to discuss and provide input on various topics, which helped to inform several of Manitoba’s K to 12 Education Action Plan priority items. Topics included mental health and well-being, curriculum and assessment, the action plan, poverty and education, student presence and attendance, suspension and exclusionary practice policy, and the funding review model.

The final meeting for the 2021/22 Student Advisory Council was held August 30–31. It included a youth speaker, discussions on the report, and reflections on the 2021/22 council term. On August 31, council members visited the Legislature where they went on a tour and met with Minister Ewasko. The council presented its first annual Report of the Student Advisory Council (pdf document 1.8 MB), and Minister Ewasko answered student questions and concerns regarding education. After the meeting, members discussed ideas for innovation in education and their hopes for the 2022/23 council.

On August 16, 2022, the Manitoba government announced and welcomed new and returning members to the 2022/23 Student Advisory Council. The first meeting of the 2022/23 council was held on September 27, 2022.

The Commitment

The role of the Student Advisory Council is to bring forward student perspectives and provide insights and advice on issues and topics that are current and emerging for Manitoba Kindergarten to Grade 12 (K–12) students. Council members share their experiences and valuable insights to ensure a vibrant future for Manitoba’s K to 12 education system.

What This Means for Manitobans

Students are at the heart of Manitoba’s education system, and their opinions play an important role in the decisions that affect them. The council ensures Manitoba students from across the province have a platform to contribute their voices in shaping the education system in Manitoba.

Next Steps

The current 2022/23 Student Advisory Council is expected to meet three to four times within its year-long mandate; however, there may be additional sub-meetings to attend.

  • The 2023/24 application window will open in winter 2023 and selection will be completed by spring 2023.
  • Council members will participate in discussions and consultations to provide input on various aspects of the education system and how they affect the children and young people who use them.
