Grade 10 Pilot Evaluation in Mathematics, Reading and Responding

General Information

The Grade 10 Pilot Evaluation in Mathematics, Reading and Responding has been developed in response to Manitoba's K to 12 Education Action Plan. Public, funded independent, and First Nations schools apply to pilot the evaluation with classes of students currently enrolled in Grade 10 English Language Arts, Essential Mathematics, or Introduction to Applied and Pre-Calculus Mathematics. The purpose of the evaluation is to inform instruction and programming at the student, classroom, and school levels to support students in reaching their high school graduation trajectories and to provide an annual snapshot of student learning, early in Grade 10. It will also inform provincial programming, policy, and resource decisions on an ongoing basis. The components of this summative evaluation are based on learning outcomes up to and including Grade 9.

Reading and Responding Overview

The Grade 10 Reading and Responding component is a summative evaluation based on the learning outcomes up to and including Grade 9 (Senior 1 English Language Arts, Manitoba Curriculum Framework of Outcomes and Senior 1 Standards, 1996). This evaluation will focus on outcomes related to reading and writing as described in the former curriculum documents.

The evaluation design reflects Manitoba's outcome-based English Language Arts curriculum and compliments classroom-based assessments.

This evaluation has a variety of readings, responses to readings, and a final written response on a topic. The following table provides an approximate mark allocation in relation to the five general learning outcomes.
