What your child is learning

This course helps the French language development of Grade 9 French Immersion students. Students learn to understand and react to a variety of oral and written texts in French, such as advertisements, songs, poems, novels, magazine articles, comics and documentaries. They communicate in French to share information, express ideas and opinions, and produce a message while keeping in mind the intended audience.

This course also helps students to recognize and appreciate how learning French is useful for them personally, intellectually and socially. They also gain an appreciation of French radio and television, and of the contributions of Francophones in the French-speaking world of today.

How your child is assessed

How your child is assessed may vary from school to school. Assessment will take place throughout the entire course. Writing assignments (e.g. reports, poems, short stories and editorials) and oral presentations are some ways the teacher may assess your child. Generally, assessment in the Français course includes a final exam prepared by the teacher, the school or the school division. The final exam measures how your child understands, organizes and communicates ideas and messages in French, as well as their knowledge of the French language and cultures. The length, value and format of this exam may differ from school to school.

Supplementary Information

In the Grade 9 Français course, the school, teachers and students choose the course materials. These materials may vary from one classroom to another.

To help students experience, understand and appreciate French culture, they are encouraged to participate in excursions, tours and workshops in French. These may be organized by the school or by students and their families. Some possible activities include: concerts and plays, workshops with artists, and trips to Québec and France.
