Grade 9 learners develop an understanding of rational numbers, powers, and exponent laws, as well as operations with these numbers, by applying order of operations and using prime factorization to reason about number properties. They generalize patterns and model relationships using linear equations, graph and analyze linear relations, and solve equations in various contexts. Learners also develop an understanding of polynomials and related operations, using them to represent and solve situations. They solve problems by applying properties of circles and analyze data by considering potential sources of bias, while exploring the role of probability in society. Finally, learners develop financial literacy by studying sources of income, spending decisions, methods of payment, as well as budgeting and managing savings.

Number sense and operations: Different representations of numbers help reveal certain properties and make calculations easier. Regardless of the type of numbers or symbols used, each operation retains the same meaning, operations are interconnected, and there are multiple ways to reach a result, some of which may be more useful depending on the situation or the problem to be solved, including using estimation to assess whether a solution is reasonable.
