Engaging learners as partners in the evaluation and communication of their learning creates space for learner identity and agency. Learners have opportunities for voice and choice in how they demonstrate their achievement of learning outcomes or goals for student-specific programming. Teachers and learners are engaged in the co-construction of success criteria, supporting learners in building their capacity to reflect on and evaluate their own learning. By doing so, learners benefit from opportunities for self-assessment and re-evaluation. Learners need to know and understand the purpose of both assessment and evaluation practices to be successful in reaching their goals. This process makes the evaluation process transparent for the learner. Teachers’ evaluation and communication plans may include opportunities for learners to self-reflect on their strengths and areas for growth in each Manitoba global competency.
