French – English Program
French Courses
French courses in the English Program aim to provide all students in Manitoba with quality French instruction which enables them to communicate in the French language and appreciate Francophone cultures.
The goals of the courses are to give students the opportunity to:
- acquire the necessary language skills to communicate in French
- value the learning of French as a tool for personal, intellectual, and social growth
- demonstrate an appreciation of Francophone cultures
- further develop intercultural communication skills that are essential to all global citizens
French courses are offered with two distinct curricula:
Framework for Learning
The Framework for Learning provides teachers with access to the curricula, to learning outcomes for French courses, as well as to resources that support effective teaching and learning.
Guidelines and Tools for French in the English Program
This document (
7.31 MB) is intended for divisional and school leaders, as well as teachers of French and is divided into two main sections:
- Guidelines to Support the Successful Delivery of French Courses focusing on the planning, teaching and learning of French, as well as visibility and student retention
- Tools to Support the Teaching and Learning of French focusing on hiring, reflection, observation, and student feedback

Interview Questions
This tool ( 4.30 KB) provides interview questions to assist school leaders in evaluating the necessary competencies to successfully teach French courses.
Teacher Guide for Self-Reflection
This tool provides teachers with reflection questions on the knowledge and skills needed to deliver quality French courses. Questions allow teachers to consider how their practices align with the guiding principles and they encourage professional growth.

Classroom Observation and Discussion
This tool is designed to guide the observation of the teaching of French and to facilitate follow-up discussion. It identifies the key elements of effective teaching and provides a framework that enables productive dialogue between school leaders and teachers.

Student Survey
This tool ( 985 KB) is designed to gather feedback directly from students regarding their experience as French learners. Its purpose is to inform instructional practices, improve the learning environment, and enhance overall student engagement and success.
Overview Table
An Overview Table ( 7.87 MB), intended for system and school leaders, provides an overview of the vision, goals, guidelines, and tools. It includes questions to guide consideration and decision-making.

Summer Institute
Each summer, teachers have an opportunity to participate in a summer institute, a multi-day workshop that provides an in-depth exploration of pedagogical practices that support the development of skills in oral communication, reading, and writing, with a rich integration of culture.
Participants: Grades 4 - 8 and Grades 9 - 12 teachers

French Second Language Revitalization Program
The French Second Language Revitalization Program (FSLRP) provides additional funding for school division and school initiatives that support the teaching and learning of French.
Bursaries for Teachers
Bursaries are available to Manitoba teachers who wish to improve their French language competencies.
