Students demonstrate understanding of and facility with visual art media, tools, and processes.

 

Students who have achieved expectations for this grade are able to

demonstrate safe and appropriate use and maintenance of a wide range of art media, tools, and processes

5-8 V-L2.1

demonstrate facility with a variety of techniques for using art media (e.g., blending chalk pastels, painting wet on wet, hand-building with clay)

5-8 V-L2.2

integrate knowledge of different art media to create multimedia or mixed-media images and/or objects
(multimedia artworks: a wide range of visual and non-visual media are combined in works such as installation art, performance art, kinetic sculpture, and works using technology
mixed-media artworks: more than one art medium is used in a finished artwork, such as a work that combines painting and sculpture)

5-8 V-L2.3

demonstrate understanding of oral, written, graphic, and modelled instructions to develop practical knowledge of and skills in a range of two- and three-dimensional media

5-6 V-L2.4

extend and refine artmaking skills in personally selected media (e.g., pracitsing techniques, exploring graphics software potential, conducting research about particular art media, tools, and processes)

All Grades
  • Oil and chalk pastels
  • Pencils, crayons, markers
  • Wash drawings (water-soluble markers and water)
  • Finger Paints Tempera paint/brushes and rollers on various surfaces (different papers, fabric, etc.)
  • Crayon and paint resist
  • Collage (tissue paper, fabric, natural and/or made objects); building patterns, images, paper mosaics
  • Texture rubbing
  • Printing: Stamping, imprinting, monoprints
  • Clay and clay tools: thumb pot, “pulling” (as in legs of an animal), modeling, decorating
  • Modelling clay: commercial or homemade
  • Assemblage (found object sculptures)
  • Photography: proper handling of camera; view-finding; taking digital
Grade 2 and up
 
  • Printmaking: Styrofoam tray relief printing; rolling ink and “pulling” prints
  • Clay and clay tools: joining, slab and coil building, care of (safety, storage, clean-up)
  • Papier Mache techniques
  • Photography: managing digital files
  • Acrylic Paint: mixing colour gradations; proper care of permanent media/brush cleaning
    and/or conventional photos
Grade 3 and up
 
  • Drawing: pen and ink, use of calligraphic lines
  • Water colour: use of transparent and opaque colours
  • Painting: background treatment
  • Photography: editing digital images; story-boards
  • Fabric and fiber: sewing and weaving
