ICT Application and Integration by Pre-service Teachers Beginning to Implement the IMYM Model

Summary of Pre-service Teachers' Self-reported Skills in Using ICT Applications

The following four graphs summarize the range of pre-service teachers at each of the four levels of ICT technical skill: Beginning, Developing, Accomplished, and Exemplary. These graphs lead us to the following conclusions:

  1. Most pre-service teachers report not having any skills with
    • web page creation (79%)
    • digital imaging (63%)
    • multimedia (56%)
    • videography/video editing (48%) (Beginning level)
  2. Most pre-service teachers identify themselves as starting to develop skills in
    • networking (69%)
    • concept mapping (60%)
    • database use (45%)
    • spreadsheet use (46%)
    • videography/video editing (45%) (Developing level)
  3. Overall, most pre-service teachers assess themselves as competent in
    • file management (82%)
    • word processing (74%)
    • email (57%)
    • basic computer operations (51%)
    • Internet searching (45%) (Accomplished level)
  4. Most pre-service teachers use email and the Internet, although most of them have not taught students to do so.
  5. During their student-teaching practicum, pre-service teachers have mostly taught their students skills only in basic computer operation and word processing. (Exemplary level)
  6. It is expected that pre-service teachers would not yet have had much opportunity to teach ICT application skills during their student-teaching practicum. In order to better prepare teacher candidates to apply ICT in their future professional practice, it is recommended that they receive training in
    • web page creation
    • digital imaging
    • multimedia
    • videography/video editing
    • concept mapping
    • database use
    • spreadsheet use
