Provincial tests are administered each semester count for 30% of students’ final course grades for language arts as well as Applied and Pre-Calculus Mathematics, and 20% of students’ final course grades for Essential Mathematics.
The tests are developed by teachers who sit on provincial committees under the direction of the department. They are marked by teachers in their school or school division using marking guides provided by the department. The department also provides training for marking and provides feedback on the accuracy of marking.

Provincial Results in HTML Format
Grade 12 English Language Arts
- There is one test common to the three courses: Transactional Focus (40S), Literary Focus (40S), and Comprehensive Focus (40S). If a student is enrolled in more than one of these courses, the provincial test mark is applied to one course only.
- The English Language Arts (40S) provincial test is optional for students in the Français and French Immersion programs and may be administered to those students at the discretion of school authorities.
Grade 12 Mathematics
- There is a separate test for each mathematics course. Students choose from among the three math courses, according to personal interests and needs. The math courses are distinct in providing for these needs. Therefore, the different mathematics tests and the results are not comparable to each other.
- Students may take more than one math course. The test is mandated for each course.
- The proportions of students writing each test are included with the graphs, below. As some students take more than one mathematics course, these proportions add up to more than 100% across the three subjects each year.
- The tests are administered in the language of instruction (English or French).
