Alternate Formats Collection for Students with Print Disabilities

Alternate Format Production Services

Audio Production

Production of audio materials for students who have a print disability and attend Manitoba schools can be requested if the title is not available for loan. When production of a text in audio format is required, two copies of the text in good condition are needed before production can begin. Both print copies will be returned to the school when production is complete.

Time lines for production of an audio text depend on the current production schedule. A lead time of three months is usually required to ensure the timely production of a text for a student.

Audio production begins in May/June for delivery in September.

See contact information below for inquiries regarding this service.

Braille and Tactile Production

Production of textbooks and supplementary reading materials in braille for students designated by a Consultant for the Blind/Visually Impaired as braille readers can be requested if the title is not available for loan. One print copy in good condition is required before production can begin. The print copy will be returned with a  plastic coil binding when production is complete. It is necessary to identify the dates when the material is required and the order in which the chapters will be used as production may be completed over several months and sent to the school in installments as needed.

Braille textbook production commences in May for delivery in September.

Teacher created material (seatwork), tests, exams and tactile drawings can be produced on request. To ensure that seatwork and tactiles are produced on time for student use, good quality print materials must be submitted a minimum of 10 working days before the date needed.

Tactile Browsing File

The Browsing File is a collection of braille and tactile graphic items which are catalogued according to subject headings. Items include subject resource material, recipes, geographical maps, mobility maps, science and social studies diagrams. These materials may be ordered for eligible students through their designated Consultant for the Blind/Visually Impaired.

Large Print Production

Large print is intended for use by students who are significantly visually impaired or have a print disability and whose opportunities to read more efficiently will be enhanced by the use of this format. A Consultant for the Blind/Visually Impaired will assess the student’s need for large print materials in collaboration with the school team. Production of large print materials can be requested if the material is not available for loan. One print copy in excellent condition must be provided by the requesting school. Production timelines will vary depending on current production schedule and the size of the book requested. The regular print text will be returned with a coil binding once production is complete. A minimum of 6 weeks is requested for production.

Ordering materials in May or June should ensure that books are ready for September.
