When you study abroad, you will experience life-changing events, meet new people, and explore new cultures. There are many ways to study abroad and the information below will help guide you towards the study abroad path that’s right for you.

I’m currently a high school student. What international study experiences are available to me?
School-Based Programs
As a high school student in Manitoba, the easiest way to have an international study experience is through a school-based program. School-based programs are planned and operated by your school. A few examples might include:
- a senior class trip to Europe
- an exchange program between your high school and a high school in Japan
- a volunteer trip to El Salvador
Talk to your guidance counselor to find out what type of school-based programs your high school offers.
Independent Programs
As a high school student, planning a study abroad trip through a reputable organization may be an option available to you. Work with your parent, teacher or guidance counselor to research, plan, and budget your study abroad experience.
Some programs may be supported by foundations or private organizations. See if grants or scholarships may be available to assist you with covering the cost of your study abroad experience. For example, Rotary Clubs will often host students during a study abroad exchange, reducing the cost of accommodation.

I’m thinking of applying to post-secondary institutions abroad. Where should I start?
As a Manitoba student interested in studying abroad, you should be aware of the Manitoba-Minnesota Reciprocity Agreement.
This agreement allows you to study at certain post-secondary institutions in Minnesota and pay domestic student tuition fees rather than international student tuition fees. For more information visit the Minnesota-Manitoba Reciprocity page.
I’m currently a post-secondary student. What international study experiences are available to me?
Institution-Based Programs
As a post-secondary student in Manitoba, the easiest way to get an international study experience is through an institution-based program. Institution-based programs are planned and operated by your post-secondary institution. A few examples might include:
- a department trip to France to study French literature
- an exchange program between your post-secondary institution and a post-secondary in England
- a practicum or co-operative educational placement in Bangladesh
