Indigenous education and improving educational outcomes for Indigenous learners continue to be priorities for Manitoba educators. The Survey on Indigenous Teachers Manitoba 2017 (formally, Manitoba Teachers’ Survey on Indigenous Education and Aboriginal Teachers’ Questionnaire) is part of Manitoba’s commitment to improve the research base for Indigenous education. In 2017, the Department administered the Survey on Indigenous Teachers Manitoba to all certified administrative and instructional personnel working within schools in Manitoba. The survey asked educators to declare whether or not they identify themselves as an Indigenous person. Self-declared Indigenous educators were asked a short series of questions regarding their ancestry and education. The department is publishing the data to continue to track the number and location of Indigenous teachers in Manitoba. The Survey on Indigenous Teachers Manitoba is invaluable in providing a profile on the number of Indigenous educators in Manitoba, as well as some key characteristics such as cultural and linguistic identity.

Manitoba Education and Early Childhood Learning recognizes that the collection and dissemination of data is essential for planning purposes at many levels. Therefore, we return data obtained through the survey to each participating school division/district and First Nations Education Authority in order to assist education leaders in planning for and meeting the needs of Indigenous learners.
