Work Terms | Recruitment and Interviews | Wages and Support for Youth | Transition
Youth Transition provides recent high school graduates a meaningful work experience and a bursary to enable them to pursue post-secondary education.
Terms of employment are flexible and can vary from 10 to 14 months between July 2, 2008 and August 31, 2009.
The purpose is to assist and encourage students who lack the funds to continue their education an opportunity to enroll in post-secondary education in September 2009. Youth who successfully complete their work experience (minimum 1450 hours) and enroll in a post-secondary institution will receive a $3,000 bursary in addition to their salaries.
Youth Transition is managed in partnership between MB4Youth, Manitoba Education, Citizenship and Youth and Student Aid, Manitoba Advanced Education and Literacy.
The jobs must provide youth with a meaningful work experience that will help develop their skills, build confidence and foster life long learning.
Participating employers are required to assign a mentor to work with the youth for the duration of their employment. Employers are also encouraged to include the youth in formal and informal training opportunities.
STEP Services recruits candidates and coordinates the interviews. Recent graduates are recruited through the high school counsellors who are familiar with their student population. Priority is given to students between the ages of 16-21 who lack the financial means and could not continue their education without the financial incentive provided by Youth Transition.
Student wages are determined by the employers. Private sector employers are eligible for a wage subsidy. Students may attend monthly presentations on topics related to post-secondary education, scholarships, bursaries and student loans, budgeting, workplace safety and health, and the labour market.
Youth prepare an evaluation report on their experience and supervisors provide them with letters of reference at the end of their work term.
Employers are encouraged to consider their youth participants for part-time employment during the school year while they are enrolled in post-secondary education.
