Manitoba Youth Job Centres (MYJCs)

Services to Students and Youth | Job Orders and Referral Process | Locations

Historically, students and youth have difficulty finding summer jobs. Often they lack job search skills or specific skills and experience required by employers. Conversely, many employers find it difficult to fill part-time, full-time or seasonal positions. Employers may not have a clear understanding of the abilities of students and youth and may overlook younger job seekers.

The Manitoba Youth Job Centres and Service Canada Centres for Youth are designed to address these issues. Our programming provides students and youth with information on employment-related issues such as labour regulations, resume preparation, interview assistance and workplace safety and health matters.  The centres can also assist employers by posting their employment opportunities free of charge.

The Manitoba Youth Job Centres (MYJC) are operated by the Provincial of Manitoba in cooperation with community-based Sponsoring Committees in 34 rural locations throughout the Province

Additionally, the Province of Manitoba partners with Service Canada to operate 10 Service Canada Centres for Youth (SCCY) in urban centres in Manitoba.

All MYJC and SCCY offices operate from May to August. The Winnipeg SCCY office (275 Portage Avenue) is open year-round.

Services to Students and Youth

There are many services offered to students and youth by the MYJC and SCCY offices. Some of these include:

  • Student/Youth Registrations:
Students/Youth can visit any MYJC/SCCY office location and register for regular* or casual employment.

    * SCCY offices do not require registrations from students or youth looking for regular (full-time/part-time) work.

  • Group Job Search and Job Readiness Workshops:
Job search workshops are designed to provide students and youth with information on how to effectively look for employment. These workshops also emphasize the development of personal skills to promote employability.

  • Individual and Group Workshops:
Group and individual assistance is available to support youth with resumes, interview skills, and job search techniques. Additionally, these workshops emphasize the development of personal skills to promote employability. Your local MYJC or SCCY staff welcome any opportunity to speak to students at educational institutions about the program’s services or to deliver resume, job interview, or employability information and assistance. No appointment is required for individual assistance provided by the MYJC or SCCY offices! Just visit your nearest centre during regular office hours for immediate assistance.

  • Odd Job Squad:
The Odd Job Squad helps young people between the age of 12 and 16 gain valuable work experience through casual, community-based employment projects. Examples of past events include town-cleanups, car washes, Canada Day window painting and other casual work activities. All events are closely supervised by MYJC Office Managers and all youth require parental consent to participate.

Odd Job Squad events are only available in communities serviced by Manitoba Youth Job Centres and are not available at any of the 10 Service Canada Centres for Youth.

  • Hire-A-Student Week.
Each year, MYJC and SCCY offices hold a an event called Hire-A-Student Week. This event takes place during the last week of June or in the first weeks of July. The purpose of the week is to promote youth employment in Manitoba through various community events and promotions such as public barbecues, parades, information presentations, etc. Please contact your nearest centre to inquire about your community’s Hire-A-Student week activities.

Job Orders and Referral Process

The primary service provided by the Manitoba Youth Job Centres is the employment referral (matching) assistance offered to employers and young people. Our staff are trained to match qualified, enthusiastic student and youth workers to summer employment opportunities as requested by local employers.

The Service Canada Centres for Youth provide an online option for job seekers. Referral services are only available for casual employment opportunities.

Employers can contact or visit any MYJC/SCCY offices to submit a Job Order Form. By completing a Job Order form, employers specify how many students or youth they require to fill an employment position and provide an overview of the job specifics (requirements, skills needed, salary, term of employment, etc.). The Job Order is then processed by our staff.

In urban centres, the SCCY staff will post the employment opportunity on the Job Bank.  In rural areas and for casual employment, MYJC and SCCY staff will contact qualified students or youth who have registered with that local office for referral to the employer.

Important information for Employers:
This service is provided to all private and public employers at no cost. MYJC and SCCY offices only refer eligible candidates based on the skills, interests and work availability as indicated on the client's registration form. When positions are posted on the Job Bank, students and youth will self-assess their suitability based on job requirements. Employers are responsible for all interviewing, screening, and hiring of clients referred to them by the MYJC or SCCY office.

Students and youth visiting their local MYJC office to register for casual, part-time or full-time employment. Once a student or youth has completed the Registration Card, they are eligible for referrals based on their skills, work preference, and availability.

Students and youth visiting the SCCY offices will be able to register for casual employment and can receive instructions on how to conduct their job search via the computerized Job Bank (accessible at any SCCY office or online at www.jobbank.gc.ca).

Important information for Students and Youth:
This service is available to all students and youth at no cost. Clients between the age of 12 to 16 must have their registration signed by a parent or legal guardian. Clients under the age of 12 are not serviced by the Manitoba Youth Job Centre or Service Canada Centres for Youth.
