Grade 4 – Science: Needs and Habitats of Plants and Animals

Printer Friendly Version Word Icon (39 KB)

Overview

Students research and explore plant and animal habitats, identifying components that plants and animals use to meet their needs. Students create representations of animal habitats, using paint or draw, presentation, or web authoring software.

Activate

Strategies Icon Students list, in electronic journals, the needs of living organisms (e.g., air, water, food, shelter, etc.), and compare the needs of animals with those of plants. [Plan and Question] Students predict the effect in a habitat when a particular population's needs are not met [Plan and Question].

Acquire

Strategies Icon Using print and electronic resources, students research the components of a specific animal's habitat. [Gather and Make Sense] In an electronic table, students record how the animal meets its needs for food, water, living space, and cover/shelter. [Gather and Make Sense] In groups, students compare completed tables and identify similarities and differences in specific animal habitats. [Collaborate]

Suggestions for Assessment:
Assess students’ comparison tables for similarities and differences in specific animal habitats.

Apply

Strategies Icon As a class, following established criteria, students create multimedia presentations representing a variety of animal habitats. [Produce to Show Understanding] Collaborative groups of students create presentation with a slide for a specific animal's habitat and a slide each that describe how the animal meets its needs for food and water, for living space, and for cover/shelter. [Collaborate] The whole class participates in a reflective conference to discuss their product and their use of ICT to learn [Reflect].

Teacher Tips:
Encourage students to ensure that animals that share common habitats are linked to each other.
Multimedia presentations can be left on a computer. Groups of students do a Gallery Walk as they move from computer to computer to view them [Communicate].

Suggestions for Assessment:
Work Sample: Review the work of the students to assess their understanding of the topic through their text and their choice of illustrations.
