Deaf and Hard of Hearing

Outreach Facilitator Services

  • Collects referrals submitted from school divisions throughout the province and assigns them to appropriate Deaf and Hard of Hearing Unit Staff
  • Organizes and provides province wide public relation ventures and professional development opportunities for parents and school teams on Education for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students
  • Organizes and instructs American Sign Language parent classes throughout the province
  • Organizes and leads group learning, social and networking opportunities for students province wide
  • Creates and distributes resource materials for interpreters, families and school teams
  • Evaluates and consults on degrees of Inclusion of Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in Manitoba
  • Provincial expert, presenter and role model on Deaf Awareness/Cultural Issues in Manitoba
  • Liaison between Manitoba Education, Citizenship and Youth (MECY) Deaf and Hard of Hearing Unit, School Divisions, Manitoba Deaf Community, and Manitoba Association of Visual Language Interpreters

  • Trained teachers with specialization in the area of Deaf/hard of hearing education who support the consultants and provide city service
  • Coordinate referrals as they are submitted from school divisions throughout the province
  • Support the use of bilingual-bicultural instructional techniques for Deaf and hard of hearing children
  • Liaise with the MECY team and School Division teams to facilitate appropriate supports for students who are Deaf and hard of hearing
  • Work with school teams to faciliate the instruction of students who are Deaf and hard of hearing at a variety of learning levels in a K-12 school setting according to curricula as established by MECY
  • Work with school teams to facilitate assessment and documentation of student progress and modifying or developing curricula to meet student needs
  • Support school teams in planning and preparing course outlines and learning materials, individual lesson plans and long-term goals appropriate to student needs
  • Collaborate with parents, administration, other staff and professionals in a team approach to support student learning
  • Provide support to the Coordinator for provincial initiatives, documents and projects
