Consultant Services

Deaf/Hard of Hearing Education Consultant Services Include:

  • Professional development opportunities for parents and school teams on Education for Students who are Deaf and/or Hard of Hearing (appropriate to the communication option used – oral, auditory verbal, or ASL).
  • Liaising with School Division teams and the MANITOBA EDUCATION team to facilitate:
    • appropriate supports for students who are Deaf and/or hard of hearing
    • appropriate communication access and development
    • the use of appropriate teaching techniques and strategies
    • the instruction of students who are Deaf and/or hard of hearing at a variety of learning levels in a K-12 school setting according to curricula established by MANITOBA EDUCATION
    • assessment and documentation of student progress
    • the modification or development of curricula to meet student needs
  • Consultative Support for school teams:
    • in planning and preparing course outlines and learning materials, individual lesson plans and long-term goals appropriate to student needs
    • in the use of technology with students, including hearing aids, cochlear implants, FM / infrared systems and videoconferencing equipment
    • regarding Deaf/hard of hearing issues
  • Liaising between the home community and organizations such as the Manitoba School for the Deaf, SMD Services, The Central Speech and Hearing Clinic, and the regional audiologist
  • Educational and social activities for rural students on an annual basis in Winnipeg (gr. 5-12)

Consultative services are available for students with significant hearing losses in rural areas of the province on a regular, ongoing basis. A completed Consultant referral form from the school and an attached audiogram are required. Please refer to the Map of Services on the Deaf and/or Hard of Hearing Services page to correctly direct your referral to your area consultant.
