Smaller Classes

Minister's Message

Thank you for visiting the Smaller Classes Initiative website. Since 2012, our government has made significant advances to realize its commitment to create smaller class sizes in kindergarten to grade three classes. Smaller Classes will enhance the quality of education in our schools by providing students with more one-on-one time with their teachers. The early years are critical to student success. We want to ensure that teachers are able to provide students with the support they need to get a strong foundation in literacy and numeracy.

On this website you will learn about the progress we have made in the first three years of the initiative. To date we have hired 313 teachers, in partnership with school divisions. We have created an additional 353 K-3 classes and are renovating or building 49 new classrooms. Across the province, we are seeing progress with 64 per cent of kindergarten to grade 3 classes having 20 or fewer students and 90% of kindergarten to grade 3 classes with 23 or fewer students.

I invite you to explore the site where you will find information about the progress we are making implementing smaller class sizes, answers to frequently asked questions, past and current provincial news releases related to the initiative, and our efforts to provide optimal learning environments in our schools. The education of children is a shared responsibility. Your interest, support and involvement in Manitoba's educational system will benefit our youngest citizens today and in the future.

Honourable James Allum
Minister of Education and Advanced Learning
