School Bus Drivers' Handbook
The School Bus Drivers' Handbook is produced by the Pupil Transportation Unit. Its purpose is to provide school bus drivers with “best known” standard procedures for safe, efficient, economical, and adequate school bus operation. The Handbook does, from time to time, undergo revision to reflect changes in Provincial and Federal regulations as well as school bus safety standards of the Canadian Standards Association. The 2010 edition underwent extensive revision in order to provide new and veteran school bus drivers with current knowledge of rules, regulations, and technical information on how to safely operate the modern school bus.
A number of revisions have been made to the Handbook since its release last year. If you currently have a copy of the 2010 Handbook, PTU asks that you keep it current by substituting the updated pages listed below for those currently in your binder.
- Introductory Information pages i and ii. The Preface has been updated and additional information added to the Notes.
- Unit A - Page 5. It was brought to PTU's attention that MPI will accept the signature of a licensed physician OR A NURSE PRACTITIONER on a medical examination report. This information is now presented in the first paragraph under Medical Examinations.
- Unit A - Page 6. It was brought to PTU's attention that more than one school bus driver trainee is allowed in the school bus vehicle during the training stage. This information is now reflected in 3. Authorized Instruction.
- Unit C - Page 28. Typographical change in the second bullet of the "Remember" box. The word "safety" has been replaced by the word "inspection".
- Unit D - Page 48. The steps involved in Stopping at a Railway Crossing have been edited.
