To comply with subsection 91(1) of The Public Schools Act that states:
No person is legally qualified to teach or to be employed by a school board as a teacher or principal unless that person holds a valid or subsisting teaching certificate issued by the Minister under The Education Administration Act.
If you are offered a term teaching or substituting position in Manitoba prior to convocation and certification, the school division or district must request a limited teaching permit on your behalf.
You are required to have applied for certification and have had the criminal record check process completed. Official transcripts have to be sent directly to the Professional Certification Unit to determine salary classification for the permit.
The grad permit is valid for approximately 1 month after the convocation date. If certification is not complete by the time the Limited Teaching permit expires, you will not be eligible to teach until certification is complete or official approval has been granted by the Professional Certification Unit.
In the case of an emergency, a school division may hire a non-certified teacher to substitute teach to a maximum of ten (10) days within a school year without requesting a permit for that individual. However, if such a person teaches for more than five consecutive days in the same assignment, a Limited Teaching Permit will then be required.
NOTE: No student can accept employment for teaching while still involved in his or her practicum.
Potential graduates from all Manitoba Faculties of Education will be considered as having the equivalent status of a fully certified teacher and granted experience in accordance with Subsection 2(2.1)a(ii) of M.R. 515/88 of The Education Administration Act.
Your salary classification for the Grad Limited Teaching permit will be established as one class below that which you would be entitled to upon certification providing official transcript(s) indicating academic standing have been received at the Professional Certification Unit.
