**Grade 11 Applied Mathematics**

This is a course for students interested in post-secondary programs that do not require a study of theoretical mathematics such as Calculus or Linear Algebra, but may involve further study in applied mathematics courses such as Statistics. Students learn to use mathematics to solve problems related to real life situations, often using technology such as graphing calculators. It is recommended that students earn a credit in this course or in Grade 11 Pre-Calculus Mathematics to continue in Grade 12 Applied Mathematics.

The topics studied in Grade 11 Applied Mathematics are:

- Analyzing Puzzles and Games
- Quadratic Functions
- Scale
- Trigonometry
- Inductive and Deductive Reasoning
- Statistics

**Grade 11 Essential Mathematics**

The Essential Mathematics course is for students who are interested in post-secondary studies that do not require advanced mathematics. It is also for students wanting to learn mathematics for their personal and work-related use after high school, and for some of the trade apprenticeship programs.

The topics studied in this course are:

- Analysis of Games and Numbers
- Interest and Credit
- 3-D Geometry
- Statistics
- Managing Money
- Relations and Patterns
- Trigonometry
- Design Modeling

**Grade 11 Pre-Calculus Mathematics**

This is a course for students who are interested in post-secondary programs that may require further study in theoretical mathematics such as Calculus or Linear Algebra. Students learn to use algebra to solve problems that may or may not be related to real life situations. It is recommended that students earn a credit in this course to continue in Grade 12 Pre-Calculus Mathematics.

The topics studied in this course are:

- Radical and Rational Equations
- Absolute Value of Numbers and Functions
- Quadratic Functions and Equations
- Sequences and Series
- Trigonometry
- Inequalities and Systems of Equations

Your child’s learning is assessed based on the topics listed under **What Your Child is Learning**. Assessments take place during the entire course. Teachers determine how they gather evidence of learning. This may include observation, projects, conversation, tests, final exams and other strategies. Teachers consider which evidence of learning is used and how much weight is attached to it to determine a grade for the report card.

To obtain a high school diploma, all students must earn one full credit in mathematics at each grade level (9 to 12).

Part of the Grade 11 Applied Mathematics course is the Mathematics Research Project. Students collect information and/or data, and present their research about a historical event or an area that interests them that involves mathematics.

Grade 11 Essential Mathematics is usually offered as one full course (1 credit) but some schools may offer it as two half courses (2 x ½ credits). When it is divided into half courses, it would be possible for a student to earn a half credit in one half-course and not in the other. When this happens, it is necessary to talk to the teacher and the school to discuss how to earn the other half credit.
