GRADE 6: FRENCH

What your child is learning

In Grade 6, children participate in short conversations about their own lives. They ask and answer simple questions in complete sentences. They also learn to identify key information and to understand what they read with the teacher’s help. They communicate about their reading by talking, drawing and making connections with their lives. Reading aloud helps them to practice correct pronunciation and to read fluently. Grade 6 children use sentences that have been modeled by the teacher to write their own short paragraphs about familiar topics; they learn to revise their writing with help from the teacher. Learning about Francophone culture is an important part of Grade 6 French.

How your child is assessed

Your child’s progress will be reported in three categories:

Oral Communication: Students listen and speak to communicate ideas and to interact with others.

How well does your child show understanding, for example, by answering questions and drawing?

How well does your child present information and communicate ideas when he or she speaks with others?

Reading: Students read to understand the meaning of the text and to respond to the written text.

How well does your child understand short texts and identify key information?

How well does your child use words, drawings and personal connections to tell about what has been read?

How well does your child read sentences aloud?

Writing: Students write to communicate ideas and information.

How well does your child write sentences based on model sentences and short paragraphs on familiar topics?

The teacher will report on your child’s progress three times a year. The information from each report helps you to support your child’s learning. You can use it to talk with your child and your child’s teacher about results, strengths, challenges and what your child will be doing next.
