Review Process
For Parents
How are learning resources selected for Manitoba classrooms?
Manitoba Education, Citizenship and Youth invites teams of teachers nominated by school divisions to examine new books, CD-ROMs, and other types of learning resources to provide students and teachers with materials that support the curriculum. Evaluation criteria include how a resource fits the curriculum, the inclusion of appropriate instructional approaches, and whether the resource is well designed, age appropriate, free of bias and appealing to students.
School divisions and schools are responsible for selecting learning resources appropriate for local use. To support them, descriptions of learning resources that have been reviewed and recommended (annotated bibliographies) are provided for schools. Schools may purchase these resources through the Manitoba Text Book Bureau.
For Publishers and Educators
Manitoba Calls for Learning Resources are requests to publishers, producers and distributors for submissions of learning resources for review. Manitoba also participates in the Western and Northern Canadian Protocol Continuous Submission for mathematics and English language arts.
Manitoba Education, Citizenship and Youth evaluates and selects learning resources using curriculum fit, instructional design, technical design and social considerations evaluation instruments under the review process outlined in The Learning Resources Evaluation Process, September 2005 (
20 KB). Teams of teacher-evaluators nominated from Manitoba schools examine publishers' submissions, evaluate learning resources and make recommendations regarding the suitability of resources for Manitoba classrooms. The selected titles are collected into subject specific annotated bibliographies.
The titles are available for sale through the Manitoba Text Book Bureau (MTBB). Recommended resources are identified in the MTBB Catalogue with a designation code (
17 KB) and can be ordered online.
