Archives Mandate

The purpose of the Archives, Instructional Resources Unit of the Manitoba Education, Citizenship and Youth, is to acquire, arrange, preserve and make accessible, historically significant publications and productions that further an understanding of the history of education in Manitoba. The Collection only acquires, preserves, and transfers records that are understood to be of rare or of particular importance to the administrative or evidential history of the Department of Education and its practices, whether these records were published or not.

The majority of records of the Archives are searchable through the Instructional Resources Unit On-Line Public Access Catalogue (OPAC).

Archives History

Located in the historic Robert Fletcher Building in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the Archives is part of the Instructional Resources Unit (IRU) of Manitoba Education, Citizenship and Youth. The IRU is a library that provides resources, reference assistance, and materials (monographs, government documents, and various media) for educational use.

The Archives began in the mid-1970's as a few boxes of old textbooks and miscellaneous rare monographs as well as some government documents. The Archives' holdings are now housed in a separate room from the Library Collection and have separate guidelines governing their arrangement, acquisition, access, and preservation.
