Reports of the Superintendents of Protestant and Catholic Schools In Manitoba, 1871 – 1888

During the period 1871 to 1890, Manitoba operated a dual, denominational school system with a superintendent of education for each of Protestant schools and Catholic schools. Each of the two Sections – Protestant and Catholic – of the Board of Education was legally required to issue an annual report beginning with the school year 1871. The surviving annual reports, or portions thereof, in the Archives of the Library for Manitoba Education, Citizenship and Youth were digitized during the summer of 2008 through the Summer Temporary Employment Program. The majority of the reports are in English for Protestant schools and French for Catholic schools. There are, however, some copies of officially published English versions of Catholic reports and French versions of Protestant reports.

These annual reports are a rich source of information on the first twenty years of Manitoba’s system of education, including the formation of school districts, legislative grant, teacher training, the course of study, authorized textbooks, pupil attendance, school inspections, students in particular grades, and statistics.
