Grants for French Language Education

Funding Formula — English Program

French: Intensive Course
  • $225 per-full time equivalency (FTE) for all students enrolled in the course
  • Approach introduced in Grade 5 or 6; in the initial year, the percentage of instruction time in French can vary between 50% and 80% for one half of the school year, then fall to a range of 11% or more for the other half of the year
  • In subsequent years, the percentage of instruction time in French is 11% or more throughout the year
  • FTE is equal to the product of the number of students and the percentage of instructional time in French. Because the percentage of instructional time varies from one semester to the next, the average percentage of French taught (the sum of the percentage of French for both semesters, divided by 2) must be used in the calculation

Table 4a — Example of Full Time Equivalency (FTE) Calculation
French: Intensive Course
Grade Number of students % instructional time in French FTE
1st semester 2nd semester Yearly average
5 (initial year) 25 60% 12% ½(60+12) = 36% = 0.36 x 25 students = 9.000
6 22 13% 11% ½(13+11) = 12% = 0.12 x 22 students = 2.640
Total 47       11.640

Table 4b — Example Grant Calculation
French: Intensive Course
Grades Amount FTE or Pupil/credit Grant
5 to 8 $225.00 per FTE 11.640 FTE = 11.640 x $225 = $2 619.00
