Biography

Ralph Backé, of Sargent Park School in the Winnipeg School Division, is the recipient of the Teaching Excellence Award – Middle Years.

Within the Sargent Park School, Ralph Backé is “the link” connecting everyone together, unifying students and teachers alike in their approach to math learning. Known as “the king of wait time”, he challenges students to take their time and think through problems. According to his nominator, “Through his engaging manner, his positive, good-natured rapport, and his sense of humour, Ralph can get even the most reluctant student to try out a question.” As a teacher mentor, Mr. Backé works alongside the Grade 4-6 team, guiding the Professional Learning Communities, sharing articles, practices and ideas. He also models best practice by team-teaching with ALL of the teachers in his K-9 school, helping them plan and strengthen their math programs. These responsibilities were initiated and undertaken by Mr. Backé himself, in addition to his regular teaching duties. The progress and success of the students and personnel at Sargent Park School are the direct result of Mr. Backé’s enthusiasm and passion for teaching.

In addition to being an outstanding educator, he is also an award-winning basketball coach, having twice received the Basketball Manitoba Junior Coach of the Year Award. He coaches Sargent Park’s senior boys’ team, leading that team to five provincial championships. His countless contributions in and outside of the school have earned Mr. Backé the highest regard from students and colleagues alike.
