A Blueprint for Action: Introduction

What are the Priority Areas?

Six priority areas for educational renewal are presented in this blueprint They are intended to provide new directions for schools and schooling in Manitoba as we move towards the twenty-first century.

The first area of change presented in New Directions concerns basic education, or essential learning for today and tomorrow. The basics or essentials of learning - whether the traditional basics of reading, writing, and mathematics, or the new enhanced basics of communication. problem-solving, human relations, and technology - are at the very foundation of every aspect of educational renewal.

The other five areas of educational renewal are:

  • educational standards and evaluation;
  • school effectiveness;
  • parental and community involvement;
  • distance education and technology; and
  • teacher education.

These areas of renewal are inter-related and together form the blueprint for action.

Note: In the Full Text part of this page, a section is devoted to each of the new directions. Each new direction contains an action statement or statements which will result in changes to schools and schooling.
