The Independent Study Option offers the following courses in Information and Communication Technology. Please list the Subject Code, Subject Designation, and the ISO Designation on the application to identify the course(s) required.

Each listing of a subject name is followed by a unique 10-digit code made up of three parts:

This half credit course is designed so that students have the flexibility in how they photograph, what is photographed, and how one learns. The choices that the student makes will tailor this course to their unique needs and talents. Students will start by using the camera in fully automatic mode. They will learn how to improve pictures by applying more control. It is structured as follows:

  • Module 1: Creating Pictures
  • Module 2: Manipulating Your Pictures

*Before writing the exam, students will take three pictures and bring them to the exam on a flash drive or CD. In addition three Picture Creation forms entitled portrait, food and macro must be completed and brought to the exam sitting. These forms are found in the course and on the ISO dowloads website. During the exam the pictures will be manipulated using image editing software. Student must make arrangements and ensure that the image editing software is installed on the computer that is being used for the 2.5 hour examination. This computer must also be capable of burning a CD (this will be provided) or access to email from the examination computer to forward your zipped (compressed) photographs electronically. All exam supervisors/proctors will be contacted by the ISO due to the technical nature of the exam.

  • A digital camera with a USB cable to connect the camera to a computer
  • Windows or Macintosh
  • Equipment to view a CD
  • Image editor software e.g. iPhoto and Picasa (Appendix B and C in the course will provide more information on Image editor software
  • Access to download Course Files
  • Access to the Internet is highly recommended as the course will make reference to support material found on the Internet. Students also have the ability to email their assignments for marking.
  • Media storage device (e.g. flashdrive, recordable CDs or DVDs)

Suggested Resources

  • Word processor to write your assignments
  • Access to a Potocopier to make a copy of your assignment prior to mailing it to your tutor/marker

This half credit course will improve students typing accuracy and speed on computer keyboards, using the touch-keying technique (keeping ones eyes on the copy and/or screen, not the keyboard, while typing). Each module consists of lesson that provide opportunities to practise and apply keyboarding skills in order to create, edit and format a variety of types of documents efficiently. Learning Activities throughout this course provide students with the opportunities to practise their skills prior to completing assignments. It is structured as follows:

  • Module 1: The Alphabetic Keyboard
  • Module 2: Numeric Keys on the Alphabetic Keyboard
  • Module 3: The Numeric Keypad

  • A word processor such as Microsoft Office or Microsoft Works
  • One of the following methods to submit assignments
    1. An email program to email assignments

Computer Science courses are designed for students who may be interested in pursuing studies in science, engineering, or computer programming at college or university. In order to be successful in the course, students need to be self-directed learners and have acquired most of the skills and knowledge described at the Literacy with ICT website.

This course gives students the chance to solve problems, accomplish tasks, and express creativity by using programming techniques in Microsoft C++ 2010 Express. These techniques are applicable to other programming languages. It is structured as follows:

  • Module 1: Introduction to Computer Science
  • Module 2: Introduction to Programming
  • Module 3: Control Structures
  • Module 4: Loops: Going in Circles!
  • Module 5: Functions: Piecework Programming

Evaluation is based on

Recommended prerequisite—Grade 11 Computer Science (30S)

Unlike other independent study option courses, this one is online, not in print. This means that, once students have been registered for the course, they will not receive a print package. Instead, they will receive a password and username that will enable them to access the course on the Internet, through an online learning management system called Blackboard. Students will then complete the course online and email their assignments to their Tutor/Marker.

This course gives students the chance to solve problems, accomplish tasks, and express creativity by using programming techniques in Microsoft C++ Express Edition. These techniques are applicable to other programming languages. This course enables students to explore and further develop skills in solving problems and prepare them for further study at college or university. It is structured as follows:

  • Module 1: Introduction
  • Module 2: Progamming Review
  • Module 3: Parallel Arrays and Structures
  • Module 4: Multi-dimensional Arrays
  • Module 5: Explorations in Programming
  • Module 6: Object Oriented Programming

Evaluation is based on

Please note that students will write their final exam under supervision on a computer. Students will not be logged in to Blackboard.
