This course will help facilitate the language development of Grade 8 students. The course includes an extensive selection of learning resources, including selections ranging from those produced for practical purposes to those created for aesthetic ones. It is structured as follows:

  • Sequence 1: In Transition – How I Am Changing
  • Sequence 2: Moving Beyond Self: Novel Study—The Outsiders
  • Sequence 3: My Role as a Consumer: The Challenge of the Marketplace
  • Sequence 4: The Role of the Mass Media in My Life: The Challenge of Evaluating Information
  • Sequence 5: Heroes
  • Sequence 6: Heroes: Novel Study
  • Sequence 7: Historical Heroes
  • Sequence 8: Portfolio Reflections

At the end of each sequence, students are required to submit all of the work of that sequence plus the sequence assignment(s). Student performance is recorded by the Tutor/Marker.

The final course mark is based on work completed during the course and, in particular, on the demonstration of the knowledge, skills and strategies, and attitudes identified in the Specific Learning Outcomes targeted in each sequence.

Mathematics 8 is based on the Common Curriculum Framework for K–12 Mathematics: Western Canadian Protocol for Collaboration in Basic Education.

The course is divided into six modules. Each module booklet is accompanied by an assignment booklet that is completed after the student has finished reading and doing the exercises in the module booklet. It is structured as follows:

Social Studies 8 is designed to explore the ways that people lived within certain societies of the past—to indicate that life today is closely related to developments which have occurred in the past. The student is encouraged to consider the wide variety of ways of life of the past and the present. It is structured into modules as follows:

  • Module 1 Life During Early Times—with an emphasis on Egypt
  • Module 2 Civilizations of the Past—with a focus on Greece and Rome
  • Module 3 Life in Early Modern Europe—an examination of feudalism, the Renaissance, the Reformation, colonization, and the Industrial Revolution
  • Module 4 Life in the Modern World—a comparison of Great Britain and Mexico, and a review of some contemporary issues

Evaluation is based on:

Midterm: Logbook Entries (Modules 1 and 2) 10%
Examination 40%
Final Term: Logbook Entries (Modules 3 and 4) 10%
