HEALTH and PHYSICS: A Grade 12 Manitoba Resource for Health and Radiation PhysicsNew Icon

Manitoba Education, in partnership with the Manitoba Division of the Canadian Cancer Society, is pleased to present the Student Resource and Teacher Guide to “HEALTH and PHYSICS: A Grade 12 Manitoba Resource for Health and Radiation Physics”. These curriculum-aligned resources for senior physics were conceived in order to support a unique, contextual unit in Manitoba science curriculum in the area of health and radiation physics.


The resource was developed using a case-study approach that follows the cancer journey of a young woman who is diagnosed with cancer while having routine imaging done following a sport-related injury. Manitoba physics teachers are provided with an opportunity to align curriculum with their teaching in meaningful situations that reflect the applications of physics to issues such as exposure to various forms of radiation in the environment, and particular uses of radiation in the health care fields. We hope that the information and resource material contained within these publications will be of interest to students, science educators, and their family members as together these constitute a reference guide to a wide array of imaging technologies, diagnostic techniques, and cancer treatment options. A sound science education in the area of health physics contributes to wider understandings of the complex fields of cancer research, diagnoses and treatment options, and in partnership with the Canadian Cancer Society demonstrates a continuing commitment to relevant, high-impact science education here in Manitoba.

 

Science Safety: A Kindergarten to Senior 4 Resource Manual for Teachers, Schools, and School Divisions (1997) - released in April 1997. This document is also available for purchase from the Manitoba Text Book Bureau.

Senior Years Science Teachers' Handbook: A Teaching Resource (1997) - released in November 1997. This handbook was produced to support Senior Years science teachers as they bridge the gap between traditional and new approaches to teaching science. It is meant as a starting point for the development of alternative perspectives and strategies.
