- IMMERSION
Students must successfully complete a minimum of one French as a Second Language - Immersion (Français langue seconde - immersion) credit in each of the Senior Years, as listed in the following table.
Throughout the secondary cycle, students extend and enhance their oral and written communication skills and value the French language and francophone cultures.
Grade 9 students are required to achieve one credit in (Senior 1) Français langue seconde - immersion (10F).
In Grade 9, students understand and interpret a variety of oral and written texts and react to them, applying critical thinking; they thus
- categorize the information in the text;
- distinguish fact, opinion and hypothesis;
- identify the point of view expressed by the author;
- analyse certain elements of advertising;
- discuss the themes, messages and rhythms of popular French songs;
- react to the values conveyed in narrative and poetic texts;
- plan, adjust and support their understanding by various means that have to do with the communication situation, the comprehension strategies, the characteristics of the texts and various tools (such as dictionaries and reference materials).
The students develop, evaluate, produce, organize, refine and share ideas and opinions; they thus
- write a text presenting an organized and coherent expression of their feelings, tastes and opinions;
- write a text in which the images created evoke feelings or emotions;
- produce a message containing various persuasive aspects;
- read with expression an excerpt of their choosing;
- organize, verify and edit what they produce by various means that have to do with the communication situation, the characteristics of the texts, the respect for the rules of the language, the style, various tools (such as dictionaries and reference materials) and the performance of tasks.
The students value their French learning as a tool for personal, intellectual and social development; they thus
- how an appreciation of French radio or television;
- show an appreciation of the contribution of francophone personalities to the creation of the francophone identity;
- complete communication projects.

Grade 10 students are required to achieve one credit in (Senior 2) Français langue seconde - immersion (20F).
In Grade 10, students understand and interpret a variety of oral and written texts and react to them, applying critical thinking; they thus
- distinguish essential from extraneous information;
- identify simple logical relationships in the texts;
- identify the themes in certain media texts;
- analyze certain linguistic and non-linguistic techniques used by the media to transmit their message;
- identify the elements that create a sense of reality, suspense, exaggeration or surprise;
- interpret the message of poetic text based on their experiences;
- react critically to texts based on factors such as the relevance of the information given and the coherence with which the ideas are presented;
- plan, adjust and support their understanding by various means that have to do with the communication situation, the comprehension strategies, the characteristics of the texts and various tools (such as dictionaries and reference materials).
The students develop, evaluate, produce, organize, refines and share ideas and opinions; they thus
- describe a learning experience by explaining the context, the process and the outcomes;
- improvise, along with other students, in reaction to a suggested situation;
- write a text presenting information or arguments, respecting the order and the structure appropriate to their communication project;
- write a story that contains an unexpected event;
- include in their text an introduction that explains what it is about and a conclusion that synthesizes it;
- organize, verify and edit what they produce by various means that have to do with the communication situation, the characteristics of the texts, the respect for the rules of the language, the style, various tools (such as dictionaries and reference materials) and the performance of tasks.
The students value their French learning as a tool for personal, intellectual and social development; they thus
- show an appreciation of contemporary film and drama from the Francophonie (French speaking world);
- show an appreciation of the contribution of contemporary personalities to Canadian and international Francophonie;
- recognize the advantages of bilingualism in their cultural, academic and professional life.

Grade 11 students are required to achieve one credit in (Senior 3) Français langue seconde - immersion (30S).
In Grade 11, students understand and interpret a variety of oral and written texts and react to them, using critical thinking; they thus
- identify the constituents of analytical and persuasive texts;
- discover the narrative point of view;
- analyze character dynamics (roles, relationships, characterization) in a story;
- identify certain characteristics of the poetic text;
- discuss the relationship between the music and the universe created by the author in a song;
- discuss certain film techniques for bringing out the desired effects and values, discuss the effectiveness of certain techniques used by the author to support the transmission of their message;
- react critically to the text by contrasting their ideas with those expressed by the author;
- plan, adjust and support their understanding by various means that have to do with the communication situation, the comprehension strategies, the characteristics of the texts and various tools (such as dictionaries and reference materials).
The students develop, evaluate, produce, organize, refine and share ideas and opinions; they thus
- present and defend their point of view effectively;
- read along with other students, with expression, an excerpt from a play;
- write a summary of a text that respects the text's characteristics;
- write a text in which the interactions between the characters are expressed in the form of a dialogue;
- organize, verify and edit what they produce by various means that have to do with the communication situation, the characteristics of the texts, the respect for the rules of the language, the style, various tools (such as dictionaries and reference materials) and the performance of tasks.
The students value their French learning as a tool for personal, intellectual and social development; they thus
- show an appreciation of French-language media;
- show an appreciation of the contribution of the francophones in the various spheres of human activity;
- take on the challenge of doing a creative project in French.

Grade 12 students are required to achieve one credit in (Senior 4) Français langue seconde - immersion (40S).
In Grade 12, students understand and interpret a variety of oral and written texts and react to them, applying critical thinking; they thus
- identify the elements that reveal objectivity or subjectivity in the way facts are presented;
- identify certain complex logical relationships in texts;
- analyse the relationship between the different components of a story;
- discuss the treatment of themes and values presented in a film or a play;
- discuss the social impact of a French song;
- react critically to analytical and persuasive texts by referring to elements such as the value of the information and the strength of the arguments presented, the structure of the texts, the effectiveness of the analysis and the argumentation;
- react to the images in poetic text;
- plan, adjust and support their understanding by various means that have to do with the communication situation, the comprehension strategies, the characteristics of the texts, and various tools (such as dictionaries and reference materials).
The students develop, evaluate, produce, organize, refine and share ideas and opinions; they thus
- make a presentation of a formal nature, supported by technological aids;
- write persuasive and/or analytical texts that respect the characteristics of such texts;
- relate a personal experience, write a story in which they bring out the elements of drama, humour or suspense, or explore the playful aspect of language;
- organize, verify and edit what they produce by various means that have to do with the communication situation, the characteristics of the texts, the respect for the rules of the language, the style, various tools (such as dictionaries and reference materials) and the performance of tasks.
The students value their French learning as a tool for personal, intellectual and social development; they thus
- show an appreciation of classical and contemporary drama and film from the Canadian and international Francophonie;
- show an appreciation of the richness of the Francophonie in Canada;
- pursue their learning of French independently.
