Kindergarten

In the combined physical education/health education curriculum, students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes for leading physically active and healthy lifestyles. The curriculum content highlighted for each grade is organized within five general learning outcomes (GLOs), which are the same for each grade.

General Learning Outcomes (GLOs) Content Highlights
1. Movement
The student will demonstrate competency in selected movement skills and knowledge of movement development and physical activities with respect to different types of learning experiences, environments, and cultures. Kindergarten students:
  • Recognize concepts related to cooperative play; personal and general space (moving without bumping); body awareness; quick and slow speeds; stop and start signals; and moving around, over, under, and between objects.
  • Explore the basic movement skills (e.g., running, hopping, jumping, underhand throwing, catching, striking, bouncing, kicking, balancing) by participating in a variety of physical activities.
2. Fitness Management
The student will demonstrate the ability to develop and follow a personal fitness plan for lifelong physical activity and well-being.

 

Kindergarten students:
  • Participate in physical activities for enjoyment and fitness development.
3. Safety
The student will demonstrate safe and responsible behaviours to manage risks and prevent injuries in physical activity participation and in daily living. Kindergarten students:
  • Recognize and follow safety rules related to physical activities, footwear, and playgrounds.
  • Identify safety symbols and rules related to traffic, school buses, poisons and chemicals, stoves, sharp utensils, bathtubs, and waterfronts.
  • Identify where to go and whom to ask for help in the community.
4. Personal and Social Management
The student will demonstrate the ability to develop self-understanding, to make health-enhancing decisions, to work cooperatively and fairly with others, and to build positive relationships with others. Kindergarten students:
  • Identify personal characteristics, behaviours, feelings, and emotions related to getting along with others.
  • Identify ways to listen attentively, avoid danger, and seek help.
  • Identify behaviours that are safe/healthy or unsafe/unhealthy.
5. Healthy Lifestyle Practices
The student will demonstrate the ability to make informed decisions for healthy living related to personal health practices, active living, healthy nutritional practices, substance use and abuse, and human sexuality. Kindergarten students:
  • Identify daily habits (including daily physical activity, personal and dental hygiene, healthy eating, and adequate sleep/rest) for healthy living.
  • Identify helpful and harmful substances.
  • Identify body parts and the right to privacy (e.g., washrooms).

Note: In Kindergarten, the health topics that contain potentially sensitive content are substance use and abuse prevention and human sexuality in GLO 5. Prior to teaching the content, schools are expected to communicate appropriate information to parents, including a parental option. A parental option means that parents may choose a school-based or alternative delivery (e.g., home, professional counselling).

Grade 1

In the combined physical education/health education curriculum, students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes for leading physically active and healthy lifestyles. General Learning Outcomes (GLOs) Content Highlights
1. Movement
The student will demonstrate competency in selected movement skills and knowledge of movement development and physical activities with respect to different types of learning experiences, environments, and cultures. Grade 1 students:
  • Recognize concepts related to directions (e.g., forward, backward); levels (e.g., high, medium, low); body shapes (e.g., curled, straight); qualities of effort (e.g., strong/light, quick/slow); moving in relation to others (e.g., lead, follow, chase); rules; strategies for target games (e.g., bowling); and fair-play behaviour.
  • Demonstrate basic movement skills (e.g., running, hopping, jumping, underhand throwing, catching, striking, bouncing, kicking, balancing) by participating in a variety of physical activities.
2. Fitness Management
The student will demonstrate the ability to develop and follow a personal fitness plan for lifelong physical activity and well-being. Grade 1 students:
  • Sustain participation in moderate to vigorous physical activities and recognize the physical changes on the body caused by physical activity (e.g., increased heart rate, body temperature).
3. Safety
The student will demonstrate safe and responsible behaviours to manage risks and prevent injuries in physical activity participation and in daily living. Grade 1 students:
  • Recognize and follow safety rules related to appropriate footwear, different surfaces (e.g., mats, climbing frames, ice), equipment, facilities, playgrounds, and exercising in different weather conditions.
  • Identify safety risks related to toys, clothing, roads and vehicles, school buses, holidays, fires, floods, tornadoes, lightning, unsupervised situations, violence prevention, and abusive situations (including sexual exploitation).
  • Identify where to go and whom to ask for help in the community.
4. Personal and Social Management
The student will demonstrate the ability to develop self-understanding, to make health-enhancing decisions, to work cooperatively and fairly with others, and to build positive relationships with others.

 

Grade 1 students:
  • Demonstrate how to set and achieve simple goals.
  • Demonstrate behaviours for getting along with others and for dealing with conflict and anger.
5. Healthy Lifestyle Practices
The student will demonstrate the ability to make informed decisions for healthy living related to personal health practices, active living, healthy nutritional practices, substance use and abuse, and human sexuality. Grade 1 students:
  • Identify daily habits (including daily physical activity, personal and dental hygiene, healthy eating, and adequate sleep/rest) for healthy living.
  • Identify safe and unsafe substances and ways of avoiding unknown substances.

Note: In Grade 1, the health topics that contain potentially sensitive content are personal safety in GLO 3 and substance use and abuse prevention in GLO 5. Grade 2

  • Recognize concepts related to balance (e.g., keeping centre of gravity low); pathways (e.g., straight, zigzag); directions (e.g., clockwise, counter-clockwise); planes (e.g., frontal, horizontal); qualities of effort (e.g., time, force, flow); moving in relation to a partner (e.g., lead, mirror, dodge); rules and strategies for tag games; and fair-play behaviour.
  • Demonstrate basic movement skills (e.g., running, jumping, skipping, rolling, underhand and overhand throwing, catching, striking, bouncing, kicking, balancing) by participating in a variety of physical activities.
2. Fitness Management
The student will demonstrate the ability to develop and follow a personal fitness plan for lifelong physical activity and well-being. Grade 2 students:
  • Sustain participation in a variety of physical activities that contribute to skill/fitness development and enjoyment.
3. Safety
The student will demonstrate safe and responsible behaviours to manage risks and prevent injuries in physical activity participation and in daily living. Grade 2 students:
  • Identify and follow basic safety rules related to physical activity (including cycling), safe exercising, clothing, and footwear.
  • Identify safety rules for roads and vehicles, school buses, electricity, weather, seasons, stairs/balconies, tools, Internet use, water/ice conditions, unsupervised situations, and assisting an injured person.
4. Personal and Social Management
The student will demonstrate the ability to develop self-understanding, to make health-enhancing decisions, to work cooperatively and fairly with others, and to build positive relationships with others. Grade 2 students:
  • Identify examples of personal responsibilities and skills for setting short-term and long-term goals; determining positive and negative consequences of decisions; showing responsibility and respect; communicating positively with others; showing ways friends can be helpful; sharing and expressing feelings; and recognizing causes of stress and ways to reduce stress.
5. Healthy Lifestyle Practices
The student will demonstrate the ability to make informed decisions for healthy living related to personal health practices, active living, healthy nutritional practices, substance use and abuse, and human sexuality. Grade 2 students:
  • Identify appropriate choices related to personal health practices, active living, and healthy eating.
  • Identify basic changes in growth and development, gender differences, and how living things produce their offspring.

Note: In Grade 2, the health topic that contains potentially sensitive content is human sexuality in GLO 5. Prior to teaching the content, schools are expected to communicate appropriate information to parents, including a parental option. A parental option means that parents may choose a school-based or alternative delivery (e.g., home, professional counselling).

Grade 3

In the combined physical education/health education curriculum, students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes for leading physically active and healthy lifestyles. 1. Movement
The student will demonstrate competency in selected movement skills and knowledge of movement development and physical activities with respect to different types of learning experiences, environments, and cultures. Grade 3 students:
  • Show an understanding of concepts related to applying force when pulling, pushing, and carrying; designing movement sequences; balancing objects; showing different qualities of speed, force, and flow; mirroring and matching movements; following rules and strategies for territory/invasion games (e.g., soccer, hockey); and practising fair-play behaviour.
  • Demonstrate basic movement skills (e.g., running, galloping, skipping, underhand and overhand throwing, catching, striking, kicking, dribbling a ball using feet, balancing and landing safely) by participating in a variety of physical activities.
2. Fitness Management
The student will demonstrate the ability to develop and follow a personal fitness plan for lifelong physical activity and well-being. Grade 3 students:
  • Sustain and record participation in physical activities that increase flexibility, muscular strength, and muscular endurance.
  • Show an understanding of the effects of exercise on the heart and personal factors that may affect participation in physical activity.
3. Safety
The student will demonstrate safe and responsible behaviours to manage risks and prevent injuries in physical activity participation and in daily living. Grade 3 students:
  • Identify risk factors and follow safe practices associated with physical activity (including cycling), footwear, clothing, equipment, carrying, lifting, pushing, and pulling.
  • Identify safety rules for fire, school bus ridership, crosswalks, seatbelt use, firearms, floatation devices, and railway tracks and crossings.
  • Recognize community safety services, and identify strategies to prevent violence and avoid unsafe situations (including sexual exploitation and unsafe Internet sites).
4. Personal and Social Management
The student will demonstrate the ability to develop self-understanding, to make health-enhancing decisions, to work cooperatively and fairly with others, and to build positive relationships with others. Grade 3 students:
  • Demonstrate skills and behaviours for showing consideration and respect for others; setting short-term and long-term goals; following steps for healthy decision making and conflict resolution; and recognizing anger triggers and assertive behaviour.
5. Healthy Lifestyle Practices
The student will demonstrate the ability to make informed decisions for healthy living related to personal health practices, active living, healthy nutritional practices, substance use and abuse, and human sexuality. Grade 3 students:
  • Identify appropriate choices related to personal health practices (including prevention of common communicable diseases), active living, healthy eating, and substance use and abuse prevention.
  • Demonstrate avoidance and assertiveness skills related to potentially dangerous situations.

Note: In Grade 3, the health topics that contain potentially sensitive content are personal safety in GLO 3 and substance use and abuse prevention in GLO 5. 1. Movement
The student will demonstrate competency in selected movement skills and knowledge of movement development and physical activities with respect to different types of learning experiences, environments, and cultures. Grade 4 students:
  • Show an understanding of concepts related to force and motion when catching or receiving a pass; space awareness; qualities of effort; choreography of movement sequences; rules and strategies for net/wall games (e.g., volleyball, handball) and striking/fielding games (e.g., softball, ultimate); and fair-play ideals.
  • Demonstrate functional use of basic movement skills and other locomotor variations in a variety of physical activities.
2. Fitness Management
The student will demonstrate the ability to develop and follow a personal fitness plan for lifelong physical activity and well-being.

 

Grade 4 students:
  • Sustain participation in a variety of physical activities that contribute to fitness, and measure and record personal progress in selected fitness tasks.
3. Safety
The student will demonstrate safe and responsible behaviours to manage risks and prevent injuries in physical activity participation and in daily living. Grade 4 students:
  • Identify and follow basic safety rules related to physical activity, exercising, clothing, and footwear.
  • Identify safety rules related to fire, school buses, roads and vehicles, and aquatic activities.
  • Identify common injuries and ways to assist an injured person.
4. Personal and Social Management
The student will demonstrate the ability to develop self-understanding, to make health-enhancing decisions, to work cooperatively and fairly with others, and to build positive relationships with others. Grade 4 students:
  • Demonstrate skills and behaviours related to personal goal setting, action planning when making a group decision, getting along with others, and stress management.
5. Healthy Lifestyle Practices
The student will demonstrate the ability to make informed decisions for healthy living related to personal health practices, active living, healthy nutritional practices, substance use and abuse, and human sexuality. Grade 4 students:
  • Design and implement an action plan related to personal health practices, daily physical activity, and healthy eating.

Grade 5

The student will demonstrate competency in selected movement skills and knowledge of movement development and physical activities with respect to different types of learning experiences, environments, and cultures. Grade 5 students:
  • Show an understanding of concepts related to balancing; designing routines showing contrast in levels, pathways, and directions; using game strategies involving a moving object; game rules and terminology; and fair play.
  • Perform and combine movement skills (e.g., running, hopping, throwing) to improve control related to sports/games, outdoor pursuits, and rhythmic/gymnastic activities, including innovative games.
2. Fitness Management
The student will demonstrate the ability to develop and follow a personal fitness plan for lifelong physical activity and well-being.

 

Grade 5 students:
  • Identify the benefits of exercise on the cardiovascular system and the factors that affect fitness development (e.g., planning, effort, motivation).
  • Participate, with correct execution, in exercises or physical activities to monitor/maintain target heart rate and improve personal health-related fitness components.
3. Safety
The student will demonstrate safe and responsible behaviours to manage risks and prevent injuries in physical activity participation and in daily living. Grade 5 students:
  • Show an understanding of safety guidelines and behaviours related to themselves and others in a variety of physical activities, including stretching techniques, and in water-based activities.
  • Describe safety concerns in the community/media related to roads, vehicles, traffic, unsupervised areas, environmental conditions, violence prevention, personal safety, and available community supports.
  • Participate safely in class activities.
4. Personal and Social Management
The student will demonstrate the ability to develop self-understanding, to make health-enhancing decisions, to work cooperatively and fairly with others, and to build positive relationships with others. Grade 5 students:
  • Show an understanding of their own and others' feelings, the influence of others in decision making, responsible social behaviours, appreciation of diversity, qualities for developing friendships, anger management, and conflict-resolution steps.
  • Demonstrate use of goal-setting process for a group goal, interpersonal skills for developing positive relationships, strategies to turn conflict into a win-win situation, and avoidance and refusal strategies.
5. Healthy Lifestyle Practices
The student will demonstrate the ability to make informed decisions for healthy living related to personal health practices, active living, healthy nutritional practices, substance use and abuse, and human sexuality. Grade 5 students:
  • Apply the knowledge and decision-making process involved in making healthy decisions in scenarios related to reproductive health and puberty, as well as avoidance of substance use and abuse.

1. Movement
The student will demonstrate competency in selected movement skills and knowledge of movement development and physical activities with respect to different types of learning experiences, environments, and cultures. Grade 6 students:
  • Show an understanding of factors that affect movement skill development; game strategies in sending and receiving activities (e.g., throwing and catching, kicking and trapping); making up routines; adapting game rules to promote inclusion; simple offensive and defensive strategies; examples of fair play; and teamwork when playing and officiating.
  • Apply selected movement skills in striving for improvement related to sports/games, outdoor pursuits, and rhythmic/gymnastic activities, including multicultural games and dances.
2. Fitness Management
The student will demonstrate the ability to develop and follow a personal fitness plan for lifelong physical activity and well-being.

 

Grade 6 students:
  • how an understanding of the health- and skill-related fitness components, the effects of exercise on the skeletal system, and proper stretching techniques.
  • Participate in physical activities to enhance and monitor personal fitness and proper technique.
3. Safety
The student will demonstrate safe and responsible behaviours to manage risks and prevent injuries in physical activity participation and in daily living. Grade 6 students:
  • Determine emergency steps for bicycle accidents and effective safety practices related to physical activity, especially to promote inclusion, and appropriate dress for exercising outdoors in different conditions.
  • Show an understanding of safety practices, basic first-aid procedures, and ways to seek help in the home, school, and community, including while babysitting.
  • Participate safely in class activities.
4. Personal and Social Management
The student will demonstrate the ability to develop self-understanding, to make health-enhancing decisions, to work cooperatively and fairly with others, and to build positive relationships with others. Grade 6 students:
  • Show an understanding of characteristics for developing self-confidence, techniques for developing and revising personal goals and plans, behaviours that promote responsible decision making and build positive relationships, and strategies for managing stress and emotions.
  • Assess and revise personal health goals, including the use of interpersonal skills, as well as decision-making, problem-solving, and stress-management skills.
5. Healthy Lifestyle Practices
The student will demonstrate the ability to make informed decisions for healthy living related to personal health practices, active living, healthy nutritional practices, substance use and abuse, and human sexuality. Grade 6 students:
  • Apply the knowledge and decision-making process involved in making healthy decisions in scenarios related to daily physical activity habits, personal hygiene practices, and nutrition.

Grade 7

1. Movement
The student will demonstrate competency in selected movement skills and knowledge of movement development and physical activities with respect to different types of learning experiences, environments, and cultures. Grade 7 students:
  • Show an understanding of concepts, rules, terms, ethics, and skill/technique in a variety of physical activities, including territory/invasion games (e.g., soccer, ultimate) and striking/fielding games (e.g., baseball, cricket).
  • Design, perform, combine, and analyze movement skills in selected physical activities related to sports/games, outdoor pursuits, and rhythmic/gymnastic activities.
2. Fitness Management
The student will demonstrate the ability to develop and follow a personal fitness plan for lifelong physical activity and well-being. Grade 7 students:
  • Describe exercises and how they affect muscular development, the principles of training, and the purpose of warm-up and cool-down activities.
  • Demonstrate behaviours to attain personal fitness goals and the ability to record and interpret their own results.
3. Safety
The student will demonstrate safe and responsible behaviours to manage risks and prevent injuries in physical activity participation and in daily living. Grade 7 students:
  • Identify safety rules, routines, and procedures related to physical activity participation; specific equipment and facilities that promote inclusion; and water-based activities.
  • Show an understanding of dangerous situations, including school intruders, home invasion, hazing, Internet use, violence prevention, and abuse, as well as ways to seek help.
  • Participate safely in class activities.
4. Personal and Social Management
The student will demonstrate the ability to develop self-understanding, to make health-enhancing decisions, to work cooperatively and fairly with others, and to build positive relationships with others. Grade 7 students:
  • Explain the mental skills and obstacles that affect goal achievement, and the skills related to dealing with change, making healthy decisions, being a leader, making new friends, and managing anger, conflict, and potentially dangerous situations.
  • Demonstrate the ability to develop interpersonal skills, as well as conflict-resolution, decision-making/problem-solving, avoidance, and refusal strategies.
5. Healthy Lifestyle Practices
The student will demonstrate the ability to make informed decisions for healthy living related to personal health practices, active living, healthy nutritional practices, substance use and abuse, and human sexuality. Grade 7 students:
  • Identify the lifestyle practices for making healthy decisions related to substance use and/or abuse issues, developing relationships, and responsible sexual behaviour.

  • Participate in fitness activities and assess progress and achievement of fitness goals, including time spent in target heart-rate zone.
3. Safety
The student will demonstrate safe and responsible behaviours to manage risks and prevent injuries in physical activity participation and in daily living. Grade 8 students:
  • Identify safety rules and procedures related to selected physical activities, including cycling and exercising.
  • Show an understanding of the laws and policies for safe communities, basic first-aid procedures, and ways to access community health information.
  • Participate safely in class activities.
4. Personal and Social Management
The student will demonstrate the ability to develop self-understanding, to make health-enhancing decisions, to work cooperatively and fairly with others, and to build positive relationships with others. Grade 8 students:
  • Show an understanding of setting and achieving goals, dealing with stereotyping, appreciating diversity, building positive relationships, and dealing with loss and grief, as well as stress and anxiety.
  • Demonstrate competency in the use of interpersonal skills, as well as goal-setting, decision-making/problem-solving, and stress-management skills.
5. Healthy Lifestyle Practices
The student will demonstrate the ability to make informed decisions for healthy living related to personal health practices, active living, healthy nutritional practices, substance use and abuse, and human sexuality. Grade 8 students:
  • Examine the healthy lifestyle practices related to personal hygiene, active living, and nutrition for maintaining healthy bodies.
  • Develop personal plans for active and healthy living.
