FRANÇAIS LANGUE SECONDE
- IMMERSION

The students will develop their language skills by listening, speaking, reading, writing, and showing a positive attitude towards learning French.

 

Kindergarten

At the end of kindergarten students will be able to understand, interpret and respond to a variety of oral and written messages by:

  • interpreting symbols;
  • following simple directions;
  • responding to a short illustrated text read out loud through gestures or drawings.

They will be able to generate, create and express ideas in a variety of ways such as:

  • drawing or using letters, writing their name;
  • repeating a few words, sentences, poems or songs.

Grade 1

At the end of Grade 1, students will be able to understand, interpret and respond to a variety of oral and written messages by:

  • recognizing several words;
  • following directions;
  • responding to a short illustrated text read out loud through gestures, drawings, words, and simple sentences.

They will be able to generate, create and express ideas in a variety of ways such as:

  • writing sentences with a model or a pattern;
  • using basic vocabulary related to school routine.

Grade 2

At the end of Grade 2, students will be able to understand, interpret and respond to a variety of oral and written messages by:

  • identifying the topic or theme of a short illustrated text and responding by expressing feelings and preferences;
  • following simple illustrated printed directions.

They will be able to generate, create and express ideas in a variety of ways such as:

  • writing sentences with a model or a pattern to conclude a story;
  • using familiar words;
  • asking and answering simple questions.

Grade 3

At the end of Grade 3, students will be able to understand, interpret and respond to a variety of oral and written messages by:

  • identifying the topic and general meaning of poems, songs, stories read out loud;
  • locating information in a short illustrated text (with preparation) and responding by expressing feelings, preferences, opinions, questions and making connections.

They will be able to generate, create and express ideas in a variety of ways such as:

  • writing several sentences after a discussion using punctuation and acquired editing strategies;
  • retelling a story or sharing a personal experience.

Grade 4

At the end of Grade 4, students will be able to understand, interpret and respond to a variety of oral and written messages by:

  • locating information in a text of several paragraphs and responding by expressing feelings, preferences, opinions, questions and making connections with personal experiences;
  • identifying main characters actions and features.

They will be able to generate, create and express ideas in a variety of ways such as:

  • role playing, giving directions, explaining a process to a particular audience using acquired vocabulary and grammar;
  • writing a short paragraph about a topic or a short story;
  • revising and editing.

Grade 5

In Grade 5, students will be able to understand, interpret and respond to a variety of oral and written messages by:

  • identifying main ideas and story structure by anticipating, predicting and inferring;
  • expressing feelings, opinions and questions.

They will be able to generate, create and express ideas in a variety of ways such as:

  • story telling, participating in a group discussion to prepare a project using acquired vocabulary and grammar;
  • writing a short paragraph about several aspects of a topic or a well-organized story;
  • revising and editing using dictionaries.

Grade 6

In Grade 6, students will be able to understand, interpret and respond to a variety of oral and written messages by:

  • using a prepared text outline to select important information;
  • following directions;
  • identifying poetic techniques such as form and design;
  • identifying the relationship between the characters' feelings and actions, and elements of the plot;
  • identifying techniques used by the media and presenters.

They will be able to generate, create and express ideas in a variety of ways such as:

  • sharing information in a group discussion or a presentation setting;
  • improvising;
  • making connections between oral and written texts to personal experiences;
  • writing several paragraphs to inform or to tell a story;
  • revising, enhancing the text, and editing using different resources.

Grade 7

In Grade 7, students will be able to understand, interpret and respond to a variety of oral and written messages by:

  • summarizing a text using a prepared outline;
  • identifying poetic techniques such as rhythm and word usage;
  • explaining the relationship between characters in stories and movies;
  • discussing media influence;
  • naming several techniques used by a presenter.

They will be able to generate, create and express ideas in a variety of ways such as:

  • expressing and supporting opinions and tastes;
  • writing a text to inform (introduction, development, conclusion);
  • writing a story showing the relationship between the characters' feelings and actions;
  • revising, enhancing the text, and editing using different types of resources.

Grade 8

In Grade 8, students will be able to understand, interpret and respond to a variety of oral and written messages by:

  • differentiating between facts, opinions and hypotheses;
  • recognizing main ideas, writer's point of view;
  • identifying poetic techniques such as rhythm, repetition, imagery, comparison, personification;
  • explaining the relationship between illustration and text in comic strips;
  • naming and using comprehension strategies.

They will be able to generate, create and express ideas in a variety of ways such as:

  • role playing;
  • planning and developing a group project using appropriate techniques;
  • offering solutions to a problem;
  • writing a text to inform using facts;
  • revising, enhancing the text, and editing using different strategies and types of resources.
