Developmental Reading Continuum (Phase 1)

Manitoba Education and Training is pleased to release an online, revised version of the Developmental Reading Continuum (Phase 1). This curriculum-based, formative (assessment as learning) tool can be used by educators and students to

  • discuss and reflect on students’ knowledge, skills and strategies, and attitudes in making meaning before, during, and after reading
  • support planning for instruction, monitoring and assessing learning, and reporting student progress to parents.

The descriptors for the continuum have been developed from clusters of learning outcomes identified in Manitoba’s Kindergarten to Grade 4 English language arts (ELA) curriculum. The team of educators who developed the reading continuum included classroom teachers, Reading Recovery™ teachers, resource teachers, reading clinicians, divisional consultants, university professors, and ELA consultants in Manitoba ’s English, French Immersion, and Français Programs.

Many schools across the province piloted the Developmental Reading Continuum (Phase 1) – Draft during the 2005-2006 school year to identify gaps and clarify descriptors. The results of the pilot guided development of the final version of this continuum.

To further facilitate the implementation of the Developmental Reading Continuum (Phase 1); the following additional resources have been developed:

  • A poster for learners, Thinking Like a Reader, was released to all K- Grade 6 schools in the spring of 2008. The poster is two sided. One side depicts the content and processes of the Developmental Reading Continuum (Phase 1) through the eyes of the strategic literacy learner and is intended for students. The reverse side describes a possible assessment process, How to Plot/Place a Student on a Developmental Reading Continuum and a print version of the Developmental Reading Continuum (Phase 1) for educators who are beginning to use continua in order to monitor reading growth and to plan for appropriate instruction.
