The information in Promising Pathways: High School and Adult EAL Programming Options for English as an Additional Language (EAL) Youth was compiled through collaboration among the Skills and Employment Partnerships, Immigration and Employment Programs, Post-Secondary Education and Workforce Development, Instruction, Curriculum, and Assessment Branch, Manitoba Associations of Newcomer Serving Organizations (MANSO), Newcomer Employment and Education Development Services Inc. (NEEDS Inc), and several settlement agencies and school divisions.

This support document includes the following components:

  • an introduction to the range of academic needs of older EAL youth
  • academic programming options, including:
    • a general discussion of relevant Manitoba public education policy, including Right to Attend and Right to Funding policies
    • adult learning centres
    • Manitoba adult literacy programs
    • General Education Development (GED) services
    • Federally funded language training
  • employability supports for students who need or wish to enter the workforce as quickly as possible.
  • financial supports
  • possible scenarios and pathways
  • a list of helpful resources

School counsellors, administrators, EAL and resource teachers and other educators working with recently-arrived immigrant youth will find specific information related to helping these young people access appropriate programming.
