K-12 English an an Additional Language (EAL) and Literacy, Academics, and Language (LAL)

Manitoba Curriculum Framework of Outcomes
Draft for Consultation and Review September 7, 2006

In December 2004, the Department launched the development of an English as an Additional Language curriculum framework that would provide a common base for EAL programming in Manitoba. These initiatives relate directly to the implementation of the K-S4 ESL Action Plan 2005-2008 and the K-S4 Education Agenda for Student Success.

A draft version of English as an Additional Language (EAL) and Literacy, Academics, and Language (LAL) , Kindergarten To Grade 12, Manitoba Curriculum Framework of Outcomes was released for consultation and review in 2006. The document includes descriptions of different stages of EAL development for Early, Middle, and Senior Years and the corresponding student learning outcomes. Recognizing the needs of adolescent and young adult learners from war-affected and disrupted learning backgrounds, Middle and senior Years "Literacy, Academics, and Language (LAL) stages of learning and the corresponding student learning outcomes have also been developed. In addition, the document provided assessment indicators and guidelines and templates for assessing students and EAL program planning. Following extensive feedback from the field, the refined and revised document is currently expected to be published in spring 2009. Contact Diana Turner for further information about the final version.
