Manitoba is implementing a change from using the term English as a Second Language (ESL) programming to English as an Additional Language (EAL) programming. Both terms (ESL and EAL) are used interchangeably on this website during the transition period.

Adult English as an Additional Language programs are funded and coordinated by Manitoba Labour and Immigration, Adult Language Training Branch. Contact them for information on programs, English language assessments, and teacher support materials.

English As An Additional Language (EAL) And Literacy, Academics, And Language (LAL) , Kindergarten To Grade 12, Manitoba Curriculum Framework Of Outcomes, Draft for Consultation and Review, September 7, 2006
A new draft version of English as an Additional Language (EAL) and Literacy, Academics, and Language (LAL) , Kindergarten To Grade 12, Manitoba Curriculum Framework Of Outcomes has been released online for consultation and review. The document includes descriptions of different stages of EAL development for Early, Middle, and Senior Years and the corresponding student learning outcomes. Recognizing the needs of adolescent and young adult learners from war-affected and disrupted learning backgrounds, Middle and senior Years "Literacy, Academics, and Language (LAL) stages of learning and the corresponding student learning outcomes have also been developed. In addition, the document provides assessment indicators and guidelines and templates for assessing students and EAL program planning.

The document will be refined and revised as required. It is expected the final document will be published early in 2007. Manitoba Education, Citizenship, and Youth invites K-12 teachers and others interested to provide feedback and suggestions concerning the development of this document.

English Language Arts: English as an Additional Language for Academic Success- A Course for Senior 4 EAL Learners (40S)
This course replaces the draft pilot version released in 2005. It is designed for advanced-level English as an additional language (EAL) students who wish to further develop the academic English language skills required for success in Senior Years and post-secondary education. Advanced EAL students who have studied English as a second language will benefit from integrated ELA/EAL courses, which reinforce and build proficiency in a range of language knowledge and skills required across the Senior Years curriculum and areas of post-secondary study. This course will help ensure success for advanced EAL learners in Senior 4 across a number of subject areas, with emphasis on the sciences, mathematics, and social sciences, as well as help students prepare for post-secondary study.

This course is the first of a series of new Senior Years courses to be developed for newcomer and international students. The course was piloted in the 2005-2006 school year.
