Grade 9 to 12 (Senior 1 to 4) Jazz Band

Senior 1 to 4 Jazz Band: Teaching Jazz: A Course of Study became the departmental curriculum for both instrumental and vocal jazz band instruction in Manitoba schools effective September 1998. The student learning outcomes in the curriculum must form the basis of instruction for all Senior 1 to 4 jazz band course offerings (instrumental and vocal) in Manitoba schools. Schools that previously offered jazz band (instrumental and vocal) as school-initiated courses were required to discontinue these locally developed curricula effective September 1998 and use the new departmental curriculum.

Senior 1 to 4 Jazz Band: Teaching Jazz: A Course of Study is organized around the following topics/chapters:

  • Rationales for Jazz Education
  • Scope and Sequence of Instruction
  • Teaching Recommendations
  • Jazz in General Music
  • Jazz in Instrumental Music
  • Jazz in Vocal Music
  • Resources for Jazz Instruction

This document is uniquely structured to cover six experience levels. It identifies the following eight categories of instruction: ear training, rhythm, composition/improvisation, history, theory, keyboard skills, instrumental skills, and vocal skills.

This initiative is the result of a partnership between Manitoba Education, Citizenship and Youth and the Manitoba Band Association (MBA) and its partners, the Manitoba Choral Association (MCA) and the Manitoba Music Educator’s Association (MMEA). Their collective vision and hard work have helped to ensure the timely release of this document as a departmental curriculum.

Schools may offer Senior 1 to 4 Jazz Band: Teaching Jazz: A Course of Study as full or half credits at each of Senior 1 to 4. Students can earn either a full or half credit at each of Senior 1, 2, 3, and 4. They can not earn a credit and a half at each grade.
