Introduction

Welcome!

Welcome to the new Manitoba Arts Education Curriculum site.  We are pleased to present newly completed  curriculum frameworks for the following Arts Education disciplines:

Dance: Kindergarten to Grade 8
Drama: Kindergarten to Grade 8
Music: Kindergarten to Grade 8
Visual Arts: Kindergarten to Grade 8

Features…

As you “click” your way around the site, you will discover the following features:

  • Each arts discipline is represented by the image of a butterfly – a symbol of beauty, growth, flight, transformation, metamorphosis, potential...  perhaps you can add to the list!
  • Arranged over each butterfly are five titles. Over the centre, or “body” of each butterfly, is a word of phrase that denotes an overarching idea about the child’s learning experience within the arts discipline.  Click on these central titles in each butterfly, and a window will open with text which elaborates on key goals and ideas, and provides further information on the organization and meaning of the various sections within the framework.
  • Over each the four wings on each butterfly, are additional titles, each of which names one of the Essential Learning Areas into which the outcomes of the individual arts discipline are organized.
  • The butterfly wings, and corresponding titles, are also “clickable” and each leads to a new page with a set of General Learning Outcomes, or GLOs.  The GLOs are relatively broad statements of the knowledge, skills and attitudes students are expected to acquire within the learning area.
  • If you then click on any GLO, a new window will open presenting a table of Specific Learning Outcomes, or SLOs.  The SLOs articulate more specific expectations of learning for children at various grade levels.  These may be specific to one grade, or may be presented in a way that spans two or more grade levels.  Some tables provide further links to “scope and sequence” charts that provide additional information related to given outcomes.
  • At the bottom of each SLO table are clickable icons that enable you to enlarge or close the table.  Also, a small “ideas butterfly” icon may appear in the bottom left corner of some tables – this indicates that there are media links available.  Click on the small butterfly, and icons representing available photos, videos, documents, web links, and so on, will appear. (Please note: the media link feature is in an early stage of development – as new materials are identified and developed, they will be added to the site).

Developing wings…

The Manitoba Arts Education Curriculum frameworks for Kindergarten to Grade 8 Dance, Drama, Music, and Visual Arts, comprise an early phase of a larger ongoing process.  Manitoba Education will continue to work with development teams of Manitoba Educators to complete frameworks in all four disciplines through to Grade 12.  As well, each framework will direct future processes to develop and infuse the Arts Education framework with implementation supports – exemplars, demonstrations, suggested teaching strategies, and so on.  The electronic format of the new Manitoba Arts Education curriculum will enable Manitoba Education and its partners to create, develop, revise, and link new resources to the framework on an ongoing basis.

In the meantime, Manitoba Education is pleased to present the new Arts Education curriculum frameworks for study, planning and voluntary implementation over the 2008-09 school year.

Let the metamorphosing begin!
