College Sturgeon Heights Collegiate St. James-Assiniboia Sturgeon Heights Social Justice Symposium College Sturgeon Heights students will plan and host a Social Justice Symposium in February 2008 which will give students the chance to learn about contemporary human rights and ecological issues occurring at the local, national and international levels.
École Leila North Community School Seven Oaks Leila North is Making a Difference Using the theme "We can make a difference", students will engage in a variety of projects. The acronym MAD (Making A Difference) will be used to unify these projects and student groups will be recognized at assemblies for their MADness.
École McIsaac School Flin Flon McIsaac Leaders in Action All grade eight students will participate in a leadership workshop with focus on understanding the needs of others. These students will then put their learning into practice by involving the entire student body in an effort to address the needs of the community, which could include projects such as recycling, community enhancement, helping sick children or others.
École Regent Park School River East Transcona Broadening Our Horizons Students will explore the seven essential virtues developed by Michele Borba and the seven sacred teachings of the Aboriginal culture and create a partnership with community-based charitable organizations in order to benefit the neighbourhood, the city, and beyond.
Erickson Elementary School Rolling River Wellness Fair Project The grade six students will develop a survey for all students, administer it and compile the results to identify social and emotional needs within the student body. They will then identify resources and coordinate speakers and presenters to deliver workshops for the students.
General Vanier School Louis Riel Get Up, Stand Up and Speak Up The grade seven and eight classes will research and host a “Fashion Recall” to create awareness of the exploitation of children through child labour and various human rights issues in the clothing and textile industry.
Gimli High School Evergreen Talking About the Tough Stuff Students will create a one day workshop on the topic of homophobia and deliver it in their school and other schools throughout Manitoba. They will also have a one day event where students attend workshops on topics such as depression, anger management, suicide, date rape, racism and bullying.
Glenlawn Collegiate Louis Riel Choices The students will work with various resource people to create a community resource guide to assist newcomer students within the school division. The guide will be called CHOICES (Collection of High School Information in Community: Empowering Students)
Harrison Middle School Brandon Acting Locally – Thinking Globally A student leadership team will focus on building student spirit, strengthening student voice, and committing to community service. The goal is for students to realize that they have the power to facilitate positive changes through their actions and decisions.
Isaac Brock School Winnipeg Zoology Inquiry The aim of this multi-aged early years classroom project is to educate students in local and global citizenship through a Zoological Inquiry focusing on environmental stewardship, specifically the issues of endangered species, habitat protection and climate change.
John Pritchard School River East Transcona Act Now A group of students will be brought together from different UNESCO schools for a workshop to decide on the theme of an ASPnet conference and to plan various session topics, activities and tours. The goal is to better prepare children and young people to meet the challenges of an increasingly complex and interdependent world.
Major Pratt School Park West Community Quilt Mural A mural will be created like a quilt with many different pieces each depicting the ideas of different members of the community. Students will meet with town council and community members to survey them and to plan the mural. A local artist will assist students in creating the mural.
Matheson Island School Frontier Vote For Youth Students will participate in information gathering on trends in voting behaviour of young people in Canada and specifically Manitoba. To do this they will contact “The Democracy Project,” and the University of Winnipeg Student Society, visit the legislature, search the internet, and then, to promote voting in their community, students will build their own website.
Meadows West School Winnipeg In the Eye of the Beholder Students will examine issues of basic human rights as they exist throughout the world. Using images from agencies such as Amnesty International and from their own community, they will create framed images to be displayed in a gallery. Parents and community will be invited to visit the gallery and purchase their child’s framed work. Proceeds will go to the charity or charities of the students’ choice.
Melita School Southwest Horizon Words into Action Recognizing that each student can act in good character within their community and beyond,  students will become involved in a variety of causes such as visiting seniors, honouring veterans, protecting the environment and assisting people in need.
Rosenfeld Elementary School Borderland Active Citizens Making History Grade four students will organize a democratic process by which the student body can select the first school mascot/nickname. Including different parties that support each name with their own elected leader, speeches and finally voting, the process will demonstrate democracy in action. Community members who wish to vote must register to obtain a voting card, and the election will be held outside of school hours.
St. James Collegiate St. James-Assiniboia Citizenship Awareness Students will organize and participate in a wide range of activities aimed at social justice including a conference, a mentoring program, a poverty walk and other volunteer projects. Different groups will be formed including a Women’s Equality Focus Group, an Aboriginal Students Group and a Student Environmental Group.
Strathcona Community School Winnipeg Trash Transformed Students will plan a process for collecting recyclable materials to create an innovative art project. They will study different artists who primarily use found art in their work. To document the project, promote sustainable development, and share their learning with others, students will also create a documentary film.
Wellington School Winnipeg Developing Active Citizens Students will examine the importance of being good citizens locally and from a global perspective by using information provided by various cultural centres, agencies and resource people. There will also be a focus on examining the cultures of new immigrant families. Students will create a video presentation from their perspective on the issues they have examined.
Wolseley School Winnipeg Drumming Across Cultures This project will explore a number of different cultures through the use of drumming and its place in the development of social justice, entertainment, ritual and solidifying of community. All students will create their own drum and learn the basics of drumming rhythms from a variety of local drummers of different backgrounds.
