Early Childhood Education

A Time for Learning, A Time for Joy: A Resource for Kindergarten Teachers
Provides Kindergarten teachers and school leaders with a play-based pedagogical approach to Manitoba's Kindergarten curriculum. This resource is practical and inspiring, developmentally appropriate, engaging of families, and congruent with children's early learning experiences prior to school entry.

Research clearly indicates that a child’s early years are critical to lifelong development. Providing children with a strong start in the early years will result in positive outcomes for families, communities and the province as a whole.
The Early Childhood Education Unit provides leadership and support to school divisions in the area of early learning for children up to age 8 years. Our focus is birth to eight since this is the most rapid period of development in human life.Through a collaborative approach, the unit partners with school divisions, other government departments (provincial, federal), Early Learning and Child Care, educational stakeholder groups, and parents to promote developmentally appropriate programming and services that help to prepare children for successful school entry and optimal learning in the early years.

The unit monitors and supports the Early Childhood Development Initiative and early literacy intervention.

Another responsibility of the unit is to provide statistical and research support to Manitoba Education and Advanced Learning, and to help connect research and data to practice, in particular related to the use of Early Development Instrument (EDI) data to improve programming and student success in early years education.

The Early Childhood Education (ECE) Unit mandate is to increase the connection between early childhood education and the formal Kindergarten to Grade 12 education system. Our goals are to increase children's readiness for school and to support their success in the early years.
