Fall 2004 Update
The four actions initially identified in the 2002 K-S4 Agenda for School Success have been supplemented by three additional actions that are intended to help strengthen the connection between education and employment.
5.1
An employability skills credential that would complement the high school diploma is being explored.
An employability skills certificate and criteria have been developed and made available to schools to help recognize the various types of learning that occur in schools.
5.2
Information is being shared about school-initiated courses to assist students in career exploration and to address local market conditions.
Online registration of school-initiated courses is now available.
The application of school-initiated courses has been expanded to increase student course options, and respond to local priorities and labour market conditions.
5.3
Assistance is being provided to schools to enable all secondary school students to develop a portfolio of skills linked to lifelong learning and employment.
An employability skills portfolio has been developed by the department and released to schools.
5.4
Articulation between secondary and post-secondary education is being enhanced through joint programming, the awarding of dual credits, and offering Challenge for Credit.
The department has revised graduation requirements to add Dual Credit and Challenge for Credit options. A community service student-initiated project allows students to receive secondary credit for contributions that they make to the community.
Three additional actions have been added to Priority 5:
5.5
Technical-vocational education will be enhanced.
Along with secondary and post-secondary partners the department has developed a multi-year technical-vocational education initiative for Manitoba. It will increase access to and quality of technical-vocational education and the supports available for learners.
5.6
Research and demonstration projects will be initiated.
The department has worked with the Canadian Millennium Scholarship Foundation to research the transition from high school to post-secondary education. The Role of Guidance in Post-Secondary Planning, Findings for Manitoba has been released to school communities.
Working collaboratively with the Canadian Millennium Scholarship Foundation, the department will also introduce two long-term research projects exploring methods of increasing post-secondary enrollment among under-represented populations.
5.7
Career development activities will be coordinated.
Regional dialogue sessions involving educators, parents, industry representatives and department staff have been held to help coordinate career development activities.
Further Action:
- Effective practices from the research and demonstration projects will be shared and implemented in secondary schools.
- As part of the three-year technical-vocational education initiative, a working group of education, industry and apprenticeship representatives will develop a work plan to address the priorities identified at the regional sessions.
