Fall 2004 Update
Priority 4
Improve Learning Opportunities for Educators
Further Action
Improving learning opportunities for educators contributes to improved student learning and performance. Manitoba Education, Citizenship and Youth continues to work with faculties of education, school divisions, schools, educational associations and other partners to investigate priority areas and alternative ways of providing learning opportunities to educators. Four major actions that were identified in the Agenda and have been undertaken include:
4.1
Professional development is being focused on key areas of instructional practice, assessment of learning, differentiated instruction, and working with high needs schools and communities.
Department consultants continue to work with stakeholder organizations to improve learning opportunities for educators. Key areas include the use of assessment information for planning instruction, differentiated instruction, literacy, early numeracy, and planning for multi-level instruction.
4.2
An online website for teachers that highlights good practice and research relating to professional development priorities is being developed.
The department has posted a reorganized Professional Learning web page that highlights education practice and research.
4.3
New formats for professional development such as teacher networks, online learning, mentoring and self-study are being developed.
During 2002/03, the department piloted the Strategic Technology-Assisted Professional Learning Environment (STAPLE) with Grade 5 teachers. This was a first, successful attempt to organize an internet-based learning community. The STAPLE pilot has been extended to other teacher groups and contexts.
4.4
Professional development is being strengthened for school leaders including the review of qualifications and credentials.
The department has inaugurated the Teacher Education and Certification Committee. It will review administrator certification and provide recommendations to strengthen professional learning for school leaders.
Further Action:
- In winter 2005, a professional learning support document, the Draft Manitoba Professional Learning Model, intended to help plan individual, school-based and systemic professional learning initiatives will be completed and released to school communities.
- Increase professional learning opportunities related to assessment.
- Recommendations for administrator certification will be forthcoming.
