2.1
The department is providing print and online materials for parents and the public that describe what students are learning in various grades and subjects.
The department has published descriptions of most of the Kindergarten to Senior 4 curricula.
2.2
Information is being provided about effective communication strategies that engage parents in the education of their children.
Working with the Manitoba Association of Parent Councils, the department has developed an information binder, delivered information sessions, created a parent information website and published A Time to Know Which Direction to Go as a graduation requirements planner for Senior Years students and their parents, and published a support document for parents of students with special needs.
2.3
Professional development is being enhanced with respect to parental and community involvement in the school, and supporting learning activities in the home.
A bibliography of articles on parent involvement has been developed and distributed at divisional information sessions to enhance professional learning about parent and community involvement.
Further Action:
- In Fall 2004, curricula information about the Senior Years Technology Program for parents and students will be available.
- The department is working with stakeholders to revise Advisory Councils for School Leadership: A Handbook for Parents, Teachers and Administrators.
- A support document entitled Aboriginal Parents and School Involvement: Making It Work is also being developed.
- For 2004-05, $400,000 funding has been approved to support Aboriginal parent involvement in schools as a strategy to improve learner success.
- A dispute resolution process will be developed as part of the Bill 13 regulations.
