Program Description:
Offer the Mature Student High School Diploma program which requires 8 credits to graduate, four at a Grade 12 level.  Previous credit courses can be applied to the MSHC.  All learners are required to do a CAA test for upgrading and placement purposes.

Some upgrading is done in math using the Competency in Mathematics program.

Computer instruction offered in keyboarding, Word Processing and spread sheets.

Operate in partnership with Park West School Division.

Program Description:
Westman Immigrant Services provides three areas of service to immigrants in Brandon: Settlement Services, Adult EAL classes, and employment assistance.  English classes focus upon language for settlement and employment purposes.  We provide outreach support to rural communities in south-western Manitoba in the area of Adult English Language instruction.  EAL instructors are supported with resources and professional development opportunities.

Literacy Programming include EAL for Settlement Purposes, EAL – Reading/Writing for the workplace, Canadian Language Benchmark level programming.

Westman Immigrant Services provides support in Career Planning, Job Search, Job Placement, Advocacy and Referral.

Hours of Operation for EAL classes include day, evening and Saturday morning programs. Hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday to Friday, Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Intake schedule is at the beginning of each month September to May.

Westman Immigrant Services facility is wheelchair accessible.

Program Description:
Grade 12 credit courses including college and university entrance courses as well as courses to prepare for Grade 12 credit courses.  The Centre offers English Language Development (LD) courses for students who speak English as an additional language.  There are assessments to place students into appropriate courses and extra resource help from teachers.  The program also offers literacy classes for students who are not ready for grade 9 level classes and for EAL students.  There is continuous registration.

The basic literacy program upgrades academic skill in English and Mathematics for students whose skill levels are at a pre-grade 9 level.  The basic literacy program provides classroom-based instruction with a strong emphasis on small groups and individualized instruction in reading, writing, spelling and math skills.

The second program provides instruction in English, Mathematics, and Science at the Grade 9 level.  As well, students are taught computer skills as part of their academic program.

Program Description:
Manitoba residents who are landed immigrants or Canadian citizens born outside the country who want to take funded English as an additional language classes must first have a Canadian Language Benchmarks Placement Test (CLBPT). English language competency is assessed in reading, writing, listening and speaking. There is no charge for the assessment for eligible clients.

Following the assessment, learners may be referred to EAL or to other classes that will best meet their needs.  Assessors also provide information on settlement services, employment preparation services or other services or agencies to assist with settling in Manitoba.

Hours of operation are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Friday; 8:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. Closed on Saturday.

Program Description:
The Adult AEL Centre of Winnipeg offers part-time day, evening and Saturday English as an Additional Language courses to adult immigrants in both regular and literacy streams. The curriculum is based on the Canadian Language Benchmarks Essential Skills and Settlement topics. Applicants must meet Adult AEL eligibility requirements and have had recent CLB assessment. Wheelchair accessible.

Program Description:
The Workplace Education Manitoba Steering Committee is comprised of two members from business, two from labour and a government Co-ordinator.  Major activities include:

  • Sensitizing industry – both management and labour – to Essential Skills and workplace literacy issues through awareness raising and promotional activities.
  • Assisting in the identification of Essential Skills and workplace literacy needs and aiding in the development of pilot projects by providing educational expertise on appropriate models, assessment tools, curriculum templates and effective practices for workplace education.
  • Researching and disseminating information related to Essential Skills and workplace literacy.
  • Providing opportunities for professional development and the building of a community of practice for workplace education practitioners and industry partners in Manitoba.

Industry Training Partnerships, Manitoba Competitiveness, Training and Trade, partners with business and labour to deliver workplace literacy and essential skills classes to interested organizations.   Essential skills are the reading, writing, numeracy, communication, team work, thinking, learning and computer skills required to successfully perform in the workplace and to maximize the use of other types of training.  Industry Training Partnerships can assist organizations to identify essential skills requirements, and develop and implement appropriate essential skills training.
