Program Description:

Community Services Offered:
Adult Literacy Services reaches out to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and programs that serve them within the province.  Support is offered in the following ways:

Consultation: resources, assessment, literacy goal setting for individuals or programs wishing to embark upon literacy education.

Workshops: developed to meet the needs of the organization or program whether at an entry level of defining literacy or an expanding level of developing assessment and evaluation tools.

Tutor Training Program: an eight week course for individuals interested in tutoring adults with intellectual developmental disabilities.  The program focuses on assessment, evaluation, goal setting, and teaching strategies with the net result being the development of a literacy portfolio unique to the tutor’s adult learner.

Program Description:
St. Norbert Adult Education Centre Philosophy: We are a community of learners that welcomes a diversity of experience and background.  Our team approach and student centred attitude supports students in setting and achieving their academic goals.  Striving to provide a positive and inviting environment, we encourage students to take an active role in acquiring skills and knowledge.  The program is a semester system with day and evening scheduled classes.

Program Description:
The Ste. Anne Adult Learning Centre offers adults the opportunity to further their education by offering courses that help them achieve a high school diploma, pre-requisites for post-secondary study, or improve their employment skills.  The centre offers courses from Grade 9-12 in all subject areas including English Language Arts, Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, Business and Computer Technology.  Courses can be taken independently and in teacher-led classes to allow for the flexibility of scheduling that adult learners need.  Knowledgeable staff are always on hand to help learners whether it be in person, over the telephone, or via email.

Other Programming:
The centre also offers some basic skill upgrading to prepare learners for entering Grade 10 English and Math courses.

Program Description:
Our program is available three days and two evenings per week. Includes computer, group settings, referrals, one to one tutoring, GED preparation and Pre-Mature High School Diploma preparation.

Family Literacy Description:
The Selkirk Rhyme and Reading Circle is a community-based Family Literacy Program incorporating aspects of the Parent Child Mother Goose model. We have extended the Program to include a focus on books. Parents of pre-school children are involved in learning to read children's literature with a focus on interactive strategies to share the books with their children. Our aims and objectives are to enhance the reading, writing and communication growth of our participants by building on the oral language awareness and competency developed via the Mother Goose model. We offer weekly sessions during which parents focus on books, rhymes, songs and stories with their children and then separate to focus on books and bookmaking while their children simultaneously do activities based on a weekly theme.

Program Description:
The learning centre provides an opportunity for consumers of mental health services to continue and/or upgrade their education as part of their treatment and rehabilitation.  This includes adult basic education upgrading, high school credit courses and development in basic skills of reading, writing, math and computers. Its services include individualized assessment, educational programming and instruction. The classroom is located on the second floor of the Vocational Resource Centre and operates daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Program Description:
Seven Oaks Adult Learning Centre offers Grade 12 credits as well as English, Math and Science preparation courses for those who need to upgrade or refresh their knowledge in these subjects.  Students work toward a regular High School Diploma, a Mature Student Diploma or credits to be transferred to other institutions for work or post-secondary education.  Classes run in four 9-week blocks in the mornings.  The morning classes are everyday, Monday to Thursday afternoon and evening classes frun for 18 weeks Monday - Wednesday or Tuesday -Thursday. No classes on Fridays.

Program Description:
This 12 week program prepares you to write the 5 Canadian GED tests.  Lessons are in Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading and Writing.  To days per week the instructor will deliver information as it pertains to the lessons in the book. The Learning Circle (TLC) promotes the parent as the child’s first teacher through themes and structure.

Program Description:
A pro-active, community-based working group, which co-ordinates, delivers and provides access to basic education, English as an additional language (EAL) and literacy learning opportunities for adults in South-eastern Manitoba.

Offers part-time community-based English classes for adults, including:

  1. Reading and Writing Skills – for personal reasons, employment or to prepare for further training.
  2. English as an Additional Language – to improve speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.

Literacy Stages: classes are held in Steinbach at the Jake Epp Public Library: M/T/W 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Specialty classes are scheduled as needs arise: Reading for Citizenship, Basic Math, etc. Evening literacy classes are held twice a week in Steinbach, Grunthal and Niverville.

EAL: community-based day and evening classes from Beginner to Intermediate Levels, schedules for English at Work classes are determined by employer needs.

Family Literacy Description:
The Family Literacy program for parents and their pre-school children is based on Mother Goose and LAPS materials.  Sessions are generally held in the fall, winter and spring, runs 8 – 10 weeks, and meet once a week for 2 hours.  Location of programming depends on needs identified by community partners such as schools and public health staff.

Southwest Adult Upgrading provides instruction in emergent literacy and numeracy, general upgrading, GED, high school level classes, community transition, computer basics and life skills.

There is opportunity to participate in small group setting or self study.

The program runs 12 months of the year and is open to incarcerated offenders in the Westman area.

Program Description:
Steps to Success, a program of the YWCA in Thompson, offers academic upgrading and literacy instruction for women and men with a focus on work readiness and essential skills.  The program is open during the day, Monday to Friday.  The YWCA also provides academic/vocational assessment service and life skills programming.
