Program Description:
The Portage Learning and Literacy Centre provides adult-focused programs from basic literacy and numeracy all the way to Grade 12.  It also provides Family Literacy, employment programs and English as an Additional Language services.

The Centre runs all year. Applicants contact the Centre in person, or by phone, fax or e-mail.  We then arrange an appointment at the Centre to explore educational history, academic levels and to discuss goals.  A program of study, schedules and a start date are then arranged. A timetable is available at www.learningcentre.net. Programs can be full-time or part-time depending on a learner’s other commitments and sponsorship arrangements.  All learners are required to make regular progress.  Programs can be delivered in small group settings, or individually.  The Centre’s Family Literacy and English as an additional language programs take place off-site. The Centre is able to assist learners with transportation and other supports on a case-by-case basis.  A certified onsite daycare is available. All Centre services are free.

Adult Literacy:
PLLC offers community-based adult literacy programming.  The program focuses on upgrading/developing skills in reading, writing and numeracy.  The program offers support for GED readiness and EAL instruction.

Family Literacy:
A family literacy program offered on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for the months of Sept and October and April and May.  The morning and afternoon sessions are two hours in length and include a variety of poems, fingerplays, songs, stories, games and crafts centred around the theme of the day.  The program is open for 3-5 year olds and their caregivers.  The program is set up to help the parent prepare the child for Kindergarten, and at the same time model ways to show that learning is fun and a lifelong process.

Program Description:
The Regional Alternative Education Centre (RAEC) provides educational opportunities for adult and teenage learners through individualized programs in an open classroom.  The Centre is a satellite classroom of W. C. Miller Collegiate for teenage students, an adult learning environment for adults wanting high school credits, and is the Altona site for Campus Manitoba.

Courses include Grades 9 to 12 core academic courses,  business-orientated credits such as computer, keyboarding, and accounting and optional credits such as family studies, psychology, and the civic service credits.  Courses are individualized to meet curricular outcomes and learners' needs. A computer management system holds course content and monitors learner progress.

Individualized learner programs mean that intake is continuous throughout the year.  Learning is self-paced, supported by teachers and educational assistants who set completion goals with students.  Different learning styles are accommodated through the varied pace, choices of learning activities, and diverse assessments.  Practical assignments are built into courses wherever possible.

RAEC runs on technology, so base line computer skills training is available and embedded in the learning at this ALC.  RAEC has established partnerships with local businesses to support learners, promote the adult learning centre, and offer upgrading to meet work requirements.
