Aboriginal Languages Teacher Education Program (ALTEP)

Several years ago, MALS identified a crisis shortage of Indigenous languages teachers in Manitoba. A recent school survey on Indigenous languages teacher training by the Indigenous Inclusion Directorate confirmed MALS’s assumption, finding that 1189 Indigenous languages teachers are urgently currently required (Manitoba Education, Indigenous Inclusion Directorate, 2021).

Mamŕhtawisiwin: The Wonder We Are Born With

Mamŕhtawisiwin: The Wonder We Are Born With—An Indigenous Education Policy Framework was developed in collaboration with over 110 individuals from across the province, including Elders and Knowledge Keepers, students, teachers, superintendents, senior post-secondary administrators, government working groups, and community partners.

The Survey on Indigenous Teachers Manitoba continues to support Manitoba’s commitment to improve the research base for Aboriginal education by establishing baseline information on the number and location of Aboriginal teachers in Manitoba.

Manitoba School Survey on Indigenous Languages Teaching

The Manitoba School Survey on Indigenous Languages Teaching was utilized to identify and assess the need for Indigenous languages teachers/instructors in Manitoba schools. The results supported determining the number of certified Indigenous languages teachers required in Manitoba.

Smudging Protocol and Guidelines 2019

Smudging is a tradition, common to many First Nations, which involves the burning of one or more medicines gathered from the earth. The four sacred medicines used in First Nations’ ceremonies are tobacco, sage, cedar and sweetgrass. The most common medicines used in a smudge are sweetgrass, sage and cedar.
