Leila North is MAD - Making a Difference!
Students and staff at École Leila North Community School are Making A Differe
nce! During the 2007-2008 school year, Making A Difference was the theme used for a variety of learning experiences that involved students ranging from a single class to the entire school. These learning experiences or MADness as we like to call them included the following:
- Students participated in the Terry Fox Run raising money for Cancer Research.
- Students donated food to the World’s Largest Food Drive held in October 2007.
- Through PAWS (Pride and Action in Winnipeg Schools), a group of students have painted and maintained areas in the school where graffiti was present, a group of students constructed a bench for the front hallway and designed and painted a mural surrounding an aquarium that they are now maintaining, a group of students shared time with seniors at a local personal care facility, a group of students examined the issue of children’s rights and held a “Keeping the Beat” dance raising money for War Child Canada, and another group of students participated in a “Day of Giving” where students created gifts and shared them with local elementary students.
- Students also donated food and prepared hampers for the Christmas Cheer Board.

- Paraprofessionals held a shoe and boot drive for Siloam Mission.
- A class of students participated in fundraising walks for Siloam Mission.
- A class of students raised money to buy bed nets for malaria prevention in Africa.
- A class of students coordinated fundraising money for a local family who lost their possessions in an apartment fire.
Students who participated in these experiences have shown leadership and initiative as well as learned more about school, local and global communities around them. It has been an opportunity for students to explore their own capacity for change, take pride in a job well done, and realize that with a little effort they can make a difference in the lives of others. After all, shouldn’t we all be MAD!
